cops and guns
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:13:39 AM »
I not sure about this but can cops buy any guns that they want without a background check? I was watch a cavalry arms 3 gun match online and i saw most of the guns were Full auto. I did some checking somewhat and i think most of the people in it are cops.

Cops are no different from anyone else and they have to pass a background check the same as anyone else. If they had full auto weapons, they were either department owned or the individual went through the necessary background checks and licensing requirements to own a Class III weapon. Police agencies can buy full auto weapons but individual officers have to follow the same rules as anyone else to personally own one.

i  made  a cop  wait  the  3 day  waiting  period

a  CCW  holder  does not have to wait

i  must  do  background  and  waiting period  for  an  ATF  agent.....according to the  ATF guy

thanks, i don't know who told me that. I was told that if you were a cop you could buy class 3 guns without a background  or waiting period, they did not have it right it seem.

In my county it takes 4-5 months to get a Concealed Carry permit.  If a sheriff wants one, he must go though the same application process including background checks.  I had a top secret security clearance but it didn't help me at all.

I believe that in nys if a person wants to become a LEO or a Police candidate they must go througha fairly extensive background check.  I don't know if it is as exhaustive as the background checks for private citizens because we are less trustworthy in the eyes of the polticians who set up the rules but LEOs all have to go through a background check.

I would assume that a uniformed officer or any officer currently on duty, in contrast to being suspended from duty or somesuch, would already qualify as much as a ccw holder would qualify, and I believe that anyone wanting to purchase a Class II firearm (full auto) in nys would have to have a Class II License - I do not believe that full auto firearms are a 'over the counter' purchase for anyone in this state.  jmtcw.
