I just think is ashamed that you have resorted to shooting those little ground dogs with a scoped 45-70 Marlin. I happen to have the Williams target peep sight on mine! At 100 yards...after the first "fouling" shot (the lowest), then the second shot....the adjusting the peep up a few clicks, I put the next three...well, as you can see. 405 grain Cast Performance bullet over 50 grains of Varget.

For Shame!!! A scope!! Give those flea bitten dogs a chance!!....well, maybe not! Good shootin!!!

My predator rifles have the following scopes. I do mostly long range shooting at coyotes, although at times I also use calls.

1..223 700 w/ 27 inch barrel Leupold 4-12 (this is also one of my main praire dog rifles. For that the 12x is about perfect for this country.

2...22-250AI 3-9 Burris with Balistic Plex.

3...25-06 with 27 in. custom barrel 4.5-14 Burris with BP

4...300 Win. Mag. 28.5 " custom barrel straight 12 x Leupold with dots from 200 to 600 yards.

In the wide open spaces of the west ranges can be from in your face to very long more often now than it used to be, so I've bumped up from the 2-7's and 3-9's I used for the first 35+ years. My favorites for about a dozen years have been the Nikon Monarch UCC 5.5-16.5X44, and the last few years I've been buying the Leupold 4.5-14x40 Long Range w/Varmint reticle. I switched to using a handgun or specialty handgun backup for the in your face shots when I bumped the scopes up.

Ladobe, what calibers are you shooting at predators???

We get sooooo much heavy wind in this country that my .22 calibers are only for very close shots. On still days they are super, but very few of those in the winter.

Everything from 17 to 54 caliber have been used over the last 50+ years. Most of my preditor rigs now days are 17/17 wildcats, but I still have a few 22's and several 24's and 26's. The 24's, 26's and 25's when I still had them for the windy days. Anything bigger is just too hard on pelts. Time of day on the desert id's the winds that can get to 35MPH fairly commonly (50-70 on the really bad days). Wind is pretty much a "for a while thing" sometime in every 24 hour period year round here on the Mojave.

Means you shoot the 17's for the early morning stands, and if the winds get too heavy the 22's for the late morning stands and the 6's or 6.5's for the afternoon stands mostly. For night hunting it is either dead calm or blowing like h_ll.

Anyway, for long range in windy conditions my favorite is my 6.5 Super Bower specialty pistol. But I like a good 243 or better yet 243WSSM as well.

I bought my RRAR Predator Pursuit for yotes and to save money put a 10 year old Simmons 44Mag 6-20x44 AO on it. Most my other guns have Leupold or Sightron and if this "junky old Simmons" will ever die I'll put something good on it but I can clearly see .22 cal holes on paper at 250 meters and the click adjusments are right and the darned thing just won't die. I'm embarassed when people say nice gun, what kind of glass is that. Man, I wish the thing would break or fog up or something. I just hate it!

On some of my P&V rigs the scope cost way more than the firearm they are mounted on (and even my factory firearms are top models, not junk). Old school, the optics are more important than the rifle, so buy the best.

the scope on my gun was a no name band( Barska scopes)and it was a very good scope. It cost 50$ and i had no problem with it. To me as long as it works when you need it, then it good.

I have 3:
1st is my Ruger M77 .22-250 with a 24x Redfield 6400 - for long long range
2nd is a Remington 700 .243 with a 6-18x Older Redfield - for long range
3rd is a Ruger #1 .218 bee with a 3-9x Leupold Vx3 - for not so long range

My favorite Varmint Rifle:
Armalite M-15A4 with a 4.5-14X40mm Nikon buckmaster with mil-dot.
I don't really uses the mil-dots that often, not many shots are that long. I really like this setup, has taken many coyotes over the years.

I have a Bushnell 10X Banner on my Savage 110 .220 Swift w/ 26" Bbl. Both have served me well for a LONG time. My most recent feat with it was a post-shot ranged 355 yd. shot on a "denied ownership" neighbors dog that attacked by wife's Pomeranean (SP?) on my front porch. It ran off and stopped to look back across the pasture. Bad Move. That 55gr. Sierra SPBT over 39.0 gr. of 4064 is like a laser beam, I don't even remember holding over any! That set up has been together I know 20 yrs.

I've read alot of negative things on GBO about BSA scopes but I have a BSA huntsman 4X16X44 on my Stevens 200 223 and a BSA cats eye 3x10x44 on my nef 7mm-08 another cats eye 3x10x44 on my sons nef 223 superlight and BSA red dot on my Mossy 835 and sons mossy 500 and have never had a problem with any of the scopes ! The 223 superlight wouldn't shoot minute of barn but that was the gun not the scope and it went away. I guess I'm just one of those guys that refuses to pay more for a scope than i paid for my gun. Not that there is anything wrong with that if thats your cup of tea it's just not mine.

Most of my varmint hunting is with SP's as well. My favorite PD and fur hunting rig these days is my 17 Fireball XP-100. For PD's in the summer i have a 6-18x Nikon Buckmasters mil-dot reticle recalibrated to the optic's highest power for longer ranges (to ~ 500 yds.). It has a 4-12x Burris Mini with std. plex reticle for coyote hunting during the winter.

My late season coyote hunting handgun is a 6.5 WSM XP-100 shooting the 140 A-Max. It has Leupold's 6.5-20x Mk. 4 FFP with Darrell Holland's UMR (Ultimate Mil-Reticle) on it. The 1st shot at a coyote with this new scope was a 435-yd. bedded coyote at 1.5 mil mark and it jumped up spun several times and fell over dead.

Overall if i had to pick only one scope/reticle it would be the 3-9x 32mm 22 Long Rifle Rapid Reticle recalibrated to whatever rig/load i had it on at the time.

I live in the east. I originally put a 6-20x 40 on my 204..What was i thinking.

I am lucky if i can see 200 yrds around here without a mountain in the way.

Sold it quick and bought a burris 1.75x7x with a lighted reticle.
I can pick up an incoming yote so much faster with that scope.

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 1.5x4.5x32mm Firefly Riflescope on my 16" Bushmaster M4 ORC. My Bushnell sits on 4.5x most of the time, but since I use this Rifle for work also wanted the low end magnification / large field of view when it is needed. So far I have no complaints with this scope.

I recently set up a T/C Encore Rifle. Currently it wears a 24" Stainless-Steel .30-06 Barrel with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40mm Firefly Riflescope. Granted this will mostly be used for Deer Hunting, but I do hope to smack a Coyote with it also.

I am in the process of getting a 26" Stainless-Steel Heavy Barrel for my Encore. This one will be chambered for the .22-250 cartridge and will more than likely end up with a Weaver V-16 4x16x42mm AO Riflescope.

For small varmints (gophers) I have a Custom Ruger 77/22 (Volquartsen Laminated Stock, Clark Custom Guns 20" Stainless-Steel Bull Barrel, reworked Factory Trigger that breaks at 1 1/4 lbs.) that wears a Weaver V-16 4x16x42mm AO Riflescope with Fine Crosshair / Dot Reticle that I just love.

On my Mini 14 I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4x mounted. On my Browning Stainless Stalker I also use a Buckmaster only its a 3x9. Both good scopes for the money.
