Do as you please, but I personally would NOT recommend that you put wax on the old Ruger "boat paddle" type synthetic stock. The stock is much too porous to benefit from any type of wax, as it will probably add to the discoloration. All of the old Ruger synthetics like these turned whitish over time. Your friend is correct regarding WD-40, but any petroleum based oil will do the same. The only difference is that these stocks tend to hold whatever you rub them down with, due to their porous nature, and what you end up with is a gun that smells like what you put on it........for a very long time. If it were me, I would buy a can of silicone spray lube, and use that. Then every so often wipe it down with a silicone gun cloth, after shooting/hunting with the rifle. Bingo, problem resolved.
