My 7mm-08 takes two whitetail today
« on: November 08, 2009, 12:45:23 PM »
Now my hunting trip today, was a completely differant story from yesterday.

My son in law and I, headed over to the property the his grandmother owns. We got in and set up with just the hint of day break. While we are up on this ridge over looking an area that we saw a buck during bowhunting season, I spot movement. I got myself in a great outlook, and bipod was holding everything steady. I put the scope and low and behold a nice shooter buck with carmal color antlers, is not paying attention. I have the crosshairs of the Nikon ProStaff w/BDC retical right in the ol windbags there.

I let the Barnes TSX 140-gr go, and the buck stood there like it hadn't even been hit, then took a couple of steps and layed down. In the picture you might make out the white hair in the grass. When we walked up to tag and recover my buck, we happen to notice he had grass still in his mouth.

Well after this I still had a B tag for getting me a doe. My son in law and I decided to move from where we were. As we relocated, I happen to notice a nice little rise that over the top might yeild something.

As we approached the top, and could just make out a couple of does. The grass was long enough that I got real low, and crept to the edge where I had a good clear shot. I again made my selection of the 2 does, and placed my Nikon ProStaff cross hairs in the heart lung area. Now this doe was not sticking around not liking what it just felt. But I tell you that the Barnes TSX 140-gr bullet created a bloodtrail a blind man could follow.

Nice shooting! 1 shot,1 kill x2.  I thought you were continuing a German tradition of the "last bite" by placing the grass in it's mouth. ;) I hope to live somewhere someday where I can use a rifle to deer hunt.

Thanks guy's, we did not place that grass in the bucks mouth but sure where laughing our butts off about it after we found him.  It is awesome when a hunt goes like this, and ya just come away with a great feeling.  Yes, the 7mm-08 Handi Rifle is now shown its stuff, as well as the Barnes TSX bullets.

Nice job and thanks for sharing.  I love the 7mm-08 round...

I am shooting the Barnes as well in my 7mm-08, but I am using the 120 grain triple shock X-bullets.

I still got 4 river bottom doe tags to go, until the closing of Thanksgiving weekend.  These can ether be filled in the same place I got these to nice whitetails, or I have a special weekend planned for a 16 yr old kid that has never been hunting before.  He had not taken hunters ed yet, but can still orange up and come along to learn.  Brandon does not have a dad any longer, as he is lodge compliments of the Montana Dept of Correction for the rest of his life (400 yr sentance).

So, it will be a very special time for Brandon.

Excellent report.  Two deer, two shots, that's nice when it goes that way, ain't it.

Congratulation!  A great day of hunting and that wound make a cool mount with the grass still in his mouth.

Montanan,

I see you have a cartridge holder on the butt stock of your Handi.  I have the same and have done a little mod that I believe works really well.  Mine kept working it's way up forward under recoil and handling in general so what I did was: Un-clip the rearward strap, slide the cartridge holder back over the swivel/clip lug by 1/2 to 3.4 of an inch, run a razor blade over the cartridge holder material so it parts and falls over the lug, run a little clear nail polish over the cut material so the threads don't fray, re-install the strap and you now have a cartridge holder that stays in place.

Usually I have taken a nail that has been heated up with a torch, then make my hole.  No threads to deal with, then unscrew the stud and slide the shell holder in place.  Put the stud threading thru the hole and retighten.

This one so far has not given me any problems of sliding forward, but thanks for the heads up.
