7mm Remington reloading question.

I have a TCR 87 thompson and have been on the hunt for a 7x57 barrel for it but they are very rare but I do find 7 mm rem. mag barrels so my question is could you reload the 7mm mag cases to the 7x57 spects with out running into a problem with preasures and things of that nature and still get close to the same preformance as the 7x57? was thinking of this as an option.

Deacon, do you have a Speer manual?  I have the Speer #13 manual and it lists reduced loads for the 7RM for every bullet weight using SR4759 powder and Magnum primers.  These listed reduced loads show only about 1850-2000 ft/sec, which is enemic even for the 7Mauser.  You may be able to push them a little harder but I don't really know this.  Funny thing though, most reloaders are trying to squeeze a little more velocity out of their load :-) !

I have done no reloading in at least 50 yrs and that was for 45 acp at the time,may be telling my age here :) :) also have no reloading manual or any reloading stuff but may have to start again but have been holding off but have been giving it some thought.

I would think you should be able to make some safe medium loads. Ken Waters in his Pet Loads would often list some lower power loads for the bigger cases. I'll have to see if he did so for the 7mm Rem Mag.  The OLD(early 90's?) IMR load pamphlets would often list loads with every rifle powder they made for nearly every cartridge and list velocity as well. But I would think you could find some success with some medium burn rate powders. I'd especially look at IMR 4895. Check the starting loads listed in some manuals and see how they compare with the 7x57.

If reloading is out for the moment, check into somew of the "reduced recoil" loads the Remington offers. Factory wise, these may be just what you're looing for.

Go to Hodgdon web site and look under youth loads and trailboss loads. They also offer their entire load database on line. Very good site for reloading.
