Nikon Binos
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:26:16 AM »
Greetings, While out on vacation I've been looking at new binos. I liked the Nikon ATBs, 8x40.

Anyone ever use them in the field? Opinions?

I've got the 8x40 Monarch ATB, current and recent production are 8x42, the 8x40 is an excellent Japan made optic, I've had mine for about 10yrs I think, they've served me well.  ;)

Tim, these must be the 8x42 then because I was just looking at them at bass pro shop a couple of days ago.

Are the new ones upgraded or the same as the ones you have?

I don't know for sure, but I think the current 8x42 is made in the Philippines, whether it's been upgraded I don't know.

nikon quit making scopes and binos in japan roughly 4 years or so ago, dont hold me to it but i think im pretty accurate. there made in the philipines including there high end monarch series scopes and their new monarch X series binos. i looked through them for a few hours along with bushnells new legend hd's and i clearly couldn't see $300 dollars difference, actually i liked the bushies better. i think the glass was better and they only cost $289. heck of a deal.

Nikon Monarch's ATB 8x42 are the BEST for me. I wear glasses and most bi-noc aren't eye glasses friendly. The ATB's are. Had to buy a 2nd pair for the wife. We use them all the time. Great to carry for hunting in the field. Great for those low light conditions.

I have the Sky&Earth SERIES Nikon 8X40 Talon binos. I have had to send them for repair twice. Reticle kept coming loose in left eye peice. Last time was about 4 years ago, and the binos are at least 10 years old now.
They are crystal clear, and I have, and am enjoying them.

What kind of binos is it that has a reticle in them? Is that some kind of rangefinder?

No it is my ignorance of what the components are called. It is the small lense closest to the eye, and in this case the left eye. I think they got it fixed for good this time.

Well I ended up buying a pair of pentax 8x43. Got a really good price on them. Regular $650 marked down to $299. Ordered online from one of our sponsors here on GBO.

My new binos came in the mail yesterday and they are very nice. I'm happy with my choice. Pintax 8x43 DCF SP. Really clear and sharp detail. I believe these are a step up from the Nikon Monarchs for about 40$ more.  ;D

Eye piece lens is called the ocular lens. The big one at the other end is called the objective lens. Both are generally dublets meaning two lens cemented together.
