« on: October 05, 2009, 03:06:36 PM »
Hello , Will be in Wrangell from Nov 1st for a few weeks . Hoping to take a nice Sitka . I dont expect anyone to give up any secret spots but does anyone have any suggestions/places that we might want to check out .
This will be my first time in Alaska . Going w/a freind who has been to Wrangell afew times last year and loved it .

Also any unique info on the area would be appreciated .

Thanks and hope all is well to everyone .

I don't know that end of the state at all but I would contact the nearest ADFG - Alaska Dept Fish and Game, Wildlife Conservation biologist and see what they would suggest.  I think the Petersburg office would cover Wrangel as they are really quite close by Alaska standards:

P.O. Box 667
Petersburg, AK 99833-0667
(907) 772-3801 phone
(907) 772-9336 fax

give this guy a call and see if he'll help you out.
Good luck and take REALLY good rain gear and boots. For me the best boots are Xtra Tuff rubber boots, or top quality hip boots.

Catch the ferry to Prince of Wales Island, go to Baird Peak south of Coffman Cove (You had better be in shape, it's quite a climb to be above timberline).  Take your time, do a lot of glassing.  There are some nice bucks there.  Forest Service roads get you within a 2 hour hike of Baird.  Get a topo map from the F.S. which should show you which roads to take.  I pulled 8 deer off there when I lived in Thorne Bay.
