info/advice/suggestions for Target pistol....???
« on: September 26, 2003, 04:01:03 AM »
been thinking about getting as good a "target type" .22 pistol as will fit within my near future budget (aproximately $450 for the pistol).
But since my realistic experience with .22 autos has been limited to a '68 (would that be harford?) High Standard Supermatic Citation. and a couple of Rugers. i kinda want input from those who know more/ have a heck of a lot more experience than i do.

the pistol in question would be used in the following manners..

General target shooting and plinking

teaching my wife and step-daughter to shoot a pistol (since wife wants a 1911-style .45 eventually teh "military grip" high standards look REAL invinting)

possibly an occasional trip to a local rimfire amtch of some sort, just for the heck of it. local range has .22 pistol Silhouette but none of the "paper-puncher" type .22 matches, so i don't know what i might do along these lines.
and YES i know that really and truly Metallic silhouette warrants a "dedicated gun" but i have neither the money nor at this moment any real knowledge if i'd enjoy MS enough to GET a dedicated gun.

so in light of what little, weird, and at least partially divergent info adn requirements i can and have given. what's the advice of the elders (aka them what knows more than i'll know in a lifetime)??

is it?

Find a Used High standard like I learned with (have been looking into this)

Buy a Ruger ( the government competition model looks good )

or is there something out there better than both that fits my needs and budget??

well thank you for your time, and any and all info you can provide is very greatly appreciated.

For my  2cents worth:

If you want a semi-auto the Ruger Govt model is hard to beat.  Oh yes!, By the way.  I started out shooting silhouettes with one.  I still use it for the open sight matches.

If your wife wants a 1911 style grip, the 44/45 is really a good choice.  I got one for one of my sons who wanted to shoot silhouettes with me.  It is much lighter than the Govt model and costs less too.

If you think you may want to get into the silhouette game talk to the guys that are out there doing it.  Most of the time these guys will bend over backward to get you hooked on the game.  (They have already beat each other so much that the challenge has lessened and they are looking for new blood, for that matter, get your wife hooked too and then she will not be so upset when you have to get a new Silhouette Gun.)  They will have extra guns for you to try and will share load info that will help you with the centerfire stuff.  I started this game 5 years ago and now I have aquired 4 didicated guns for NRA Field Pistol and Hunter pistol and Both rimfire and pistol cartridge Cowboy Rifle.  And I still own the two Rugers that got me started in this game.

Try it, You'll like it.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Det',
I've been shooting bullseye for ~12 years and have used the ruger 678 Govt model the SaW M-41, the IZH and now I am shooting a Marvel .22 conversion on a 1911 frame. This combination has proven to be the best for me. Many people have .45 around that they don't shoot too much.

The Marvel is not one of those cheesy conversions like the Ceiner or it's Wilson/Kimber versions. It is a competitive .22 unit capable of sub 1" groups at 50 yards. They are available with adjustable sights or a Weaver rail for Scope or red dot use. Check out their web site. I have no financial interest in this company.

I have to agree with larry, If you want a top notch 22, the marvel conversion is the best shooting 22, I've ever had in my hands! Got mine about 3 months ago. & I'm impressed! I have owned rugers, high standards, & a ciener platnum conversion, but the marvel is the best. Regards Mike

i've heard very good reveiws of the Marvel conversion here and elsewhere..  thing is that i currently do not own a 1911 on which to mount it, and once you add int eh cost of a decent 1911, that takes the price of using the Marvel as my .22 pistol a bit out of the price range (by aproximately the cost of the kit)

good idea but not something do-able for me at this time...

thanks agian guys  :-)
