  Well I just bought a new Browning X-Bolt stainless stalker. Looks like it is going to be a great rifle though I have yet to shoot it. When choosing the caliber for this gun I knew I wanted a short action and I didn't want to get to fancy so it was a toss up between the 7mm08 and the 308. I know both are great calibers right? I have always though that I would like to have a 7mm but really don't know why it just interested me I guess. The lack of available ammo for this caliber has me a little worried but it does seem that there is enough out there for medium size game. So anyway I would love to hear some of you opinions on the 7mm08 and do you think I made a good choice in this caliber. This of course is for deer size game, maybe someday out west for antelope or mule deer. Thanks!!

You made a good choice.  Can't go wrong with the 308 or the 7mm-08 for anything including elk.  I have a 7mm-08 in a Savage that I gave my oldest son and it is a tack driver.  My favorite is my BLR, light, fast to aim and has taken several whitetails and mule deer.  Then I got a Handi-rifle in 7mm-08 that I haven't worked with much yet, but it shot 140gr Rem Corelocs into about 1 1/4".  Haven't worked up any handloads for it yet.  I favor the 7mm-08 over the 308 for a little less recoil and a little flatter shooting.  Like I said, ya done good!  DP

You sure did do good. There is no such thing as the "perfect" deer round. That being said, the 7mm-08 is the perfect deer round.

I absolutely love my little Browning BLR in 7mm-08. I'm not really a big believer in owning more than one rifle in the same caliber. But, I am considering another 7-08 in a bolt action. I am a lefty and have a tough selection in bolts but I'm sure I'll add one sooner or later.

I have a Remington 7600 pump 7mm-08. It's a dandy cartridge. I have had great results with 140gr Remington CoreLokts.

I just ordered a new Marlin bolt action 7-08, I really like the round, shoot it in my 15" Encore also and a Savage 110.

You probably know the 7-08 is a necked down 308. I always shot 06's but the gun store guy convinced me some years back to buy a Rem 700  in 7-08. What a great calber. It is soft shooting, deadly accurate and have yet to have a deer run more than 50 yards. I tried out a variety of bullets but my particular gun loves the Federal NBT.

Excellent choice. If you study the ballistics data you will see that it shoots flatter than a 308 and delivers much better energy at longer ranges. It is a favoured cartridge for metallic silhouette competition as a result. If you hand load, bullet choice is excellent. Go dude. Enjoy!    8)

    I don't believe that in a blind test, you would be able to tell the difference between shooting the 7mm-08 and the .308 (140 vs. 150 grain bullets).   And, there would be virtually no difference in the effect upon any animal you may shoot.

   I do know that people who switch to the 7mm-08 quickly fall in love with them.  The 140 grain factory loads are not hard to find, and are a perfect deer round.  The 7mm gives them slightly flatter trajectory at very long range.  It is a no-muss no-fuss cartridge.  And, it seems to rekindle people's interest in rifle shooting when they have become bored with the standard 30 caliber rounds.

You will enjoy that caliber.  I bought my girlfriend a handi rifle in 7mm08 3 years ago and she has taken 4 deer and a coyote with it.  I think one deer ran about 20 yards, the rest were instant kills.  I myself have never been a big fan of the 308.  Certainly not because it isn't one of the best deer rounds out there, but mainly because it seems like everyone and their brother around here owns one.  So I like to have something different.  Those x-bolts are some kind of accurate too! I set the sights for one of my friends new x-bolt in 308, and that thing was really stacking them.  I would love to have one in 7mm-08. Congratulations on your new rifle let us know how it shoots.
