i don't get as good extraction of cases as i'd like. when the bolt is out the gun, should i be able to slide a case up under the extractors and the case stay in place? sort of like controlled round feed bolts(mauser 98)
at present i can't get this

You might just have some built up "gunk" around the bolt head. Try disassembling the bolt and cleaning with gun scrubber or your favorite solvent. To do this:
Remove the bolt from the gun.
Carefully remove the spring clip for the extractor.
Remove the cartridge guide and the extractor noting their position
Clean all parts throughly and apply sparingly light machine oil or oil of your choice
Reassemble in reverse order
This resolved the same problem that I had on my MK II.
