Making your own snares
« on: October 03, 2003, 05:41:59 AM »
How many here make their own snares?  I have made my own before, but was considering buying them this year.  How much should I expect to pay for a good coyote/raccoon snare?

I've never purchased a snare; guess I just like the hands on approach.  I do enjoy the time I spend preparing for the "hunt" almost as much as the "hunt".  I enjoy skinning and putting up my fur also.

It seems to me that $25 a doz is about the going rate for dispatch snares, I think.  But if you go and email old boggy he'll certainly know.

I make all my own snares, and for a few locals. My suggestion for you is to buy snares from a reputable supplier for the first year, that will tell you everything you might want tochange on the snares, then hit a convention or two and pick up components for the following year.
Once you start buying your own cable, you can make your own drowners, double stake ends, runners, etc.

Must not have read it too well the first time!Seems you already made a few;as to how much, depends on the components,25 a doz seems way high, even for 7' 3/32 camloc yote snares.
We can all check Toms catalog..........since its too cold to dip;he oughta be out with it soon.

Just wanted to let youknow that i bought some raccoon snares on EBAY for $9.95 a doz.  You have to put your own deer stops if needed but that is easy.  If you do a search on YAHOO for snares you will get plenty of
sites for buying snares..

umm, well i was just at the trapping convention in valentine ne and snares were anywhere frm 1.99 to 16.99 depending on length and lock style, i use a 10 foot snare with cam lock locks, these r a lil on the more expensive side but never too bad, look up John Grahm (amberg snares) or Rally Hess all kinds both guys can hook u up with anything u need!! good luck

I "rebuild" all of mine. I think I am still on the original locks from about 4 dozen I bought several years ago. After a catch, I salvage whatever snare cable I can out of them, which usually isn't much. But, I always save my locks. I found I can bargain shop and get 3/32" cable at a good deal if I buy bulk spools. Then I shop around for best buy on aluminum double & single ferrules. I already have a 4-dozen count supply of locks to reuse each year.
Buying the bulk snare cable also allows me to custom make lengths to suit my various set locations and needs, too.
Since you brought this question up, I am assuming that buying, making, or using snares may be a fairly new venture for you??? If so, have fun. Its a great learning tool and I think will make you a better trapper all around. Any time you can make blind sets for specific target species (no lure, bait, calling agents, etc.) I think it makes you a better trapper.

Just to add / reiterate that many times the cable from a sucsessful snare is unfit for re-use as a snare.  However, it often is good enough for use as an extention.  By accumulating etentions one can start to save a bit by making shorter snares and adding extentions.
