redhawk .44 ?
« on: November 24, 2009, 07:36:22 AM »
Hello folks,

I am looking at a 7 1/2" stainless .44 redhawk in good condition.  The guy says make an offer.  I have no idea where to start.  I would appreciate any suggestions.  I want it for hunting deer and hog.  It doesn't have a scope. But comes w/ rings.

Thanks

I am NOT the right person to be pricing Rugers as I seem always to think them worth far less than most others on here do. BUT having said that. I'd offer him $300 and doubt I'd go above $350 to $375 unless you want it really really badly. I've often thought I'd like to give one a try tho knowing me and my history with Ruger guns it would likely be available to someone else within a month or two if I did.

The prices I listed are what I'd personally be willing to do should I ever act on that impulse I have to some day pick up a Redhawk. If it were a SRH I'd probably not even consider it yet others would jump on it even more quickly and likely pay more. The RH is not nearly as popular it seems as the SRH and the BH and SBH guns. Me I like it best of the four.

Did you decide to buy it?

I have had several different 44's and in my opinion, (everybody has one and they were worth just what they cost) the Redhawk is the one to have. They are very well made, accurate, and although the trigger pull is hard to get down like some others, I can shoot them. If you want a handgun to hunt with, you won't have to take a back seat to anyone if you use a Redhawk.

Just me, but I hate when someone says "make me an offer". I usually say $1. ;D Seriously, I ask them to price it and if I  think it is reasonable and I want it...I buy it. If they won't price it I move on.

Even'in Mrgd,

The used gun prices are not good at this point from a sellers stand point, so I would start low and see where I end up.

The RedHawk is a GREAT handgun.  Strong and as some say heavy as a tank, but it is one tough piece.

My regular diet for my 5.5" is a 310gr. LBT cast bullet ahead of 19grs of AA #9.

Believe me when I say this gun takes a lick'in and keeps on tick'in.

Mine has a great single action trigger, while the double action is long but smoooooooooooooth.

I pack it in a cross draw rig which allows the carry of" whatever" on the right side, plus allows carry when seated on the 4wheeler or in the rig.

GB and I always come down on different side over RUGER, but I have had a bunch of them over the years, with 11 on hand at present.

And of the ones passed on, I can't think of one I wouldn't be willing if not very eager to return to my collection.

Keep em coming!

I have a super red hack in 44mag. Have had good luck with it . New there are around $650. if you can get it for around $400, YOU GOT A DEAL.  The way I look at it , it is worth what ever you think it is worth. Just My 2 cents. Good Luck.  :o

If you can get it for $400.00 or less I'd say go for it. Those big Rugers are built like a tank. The trigger pull may not be a slick as a Smith but feeding it a diet of full magnum loads it'll still be slinging lead downrange while a Smith is getting retuned at the factory. Yeah I know I'm starting something here with the Smith guys. What can I say, I've owned both. Smiths are smoother, Rugers are tougher and can be made smooth.

Nothing against 7.5" barrels ...... I own a RH with that length.

But what do you want the gun for?

For woods protection? ......... For hunting?

I started on my .44 mag "oddessy" with a 7.5" RH .... still own it also.

I wanted a woods protection gun.

What I found is that my RH was really a hunting gun.

So I bought a Smith & Wesson Mountain gun ....... with it's tapered four inch tube it bucked a bunch but balances NICELY and packs even nicer!

Then, thinking I could have my cake and eat it too ...... I bought a 9.5" SRH and figured on a barrel chopping project.

Well, I still have ALL of these three revolvers and could not muster up the courage to chop that SRH ...... and as my original plan was to sell the RH to help defray the cost of chopping the SRH ........ I backed out on selling it.

I will say this in retrospect.

If I had come across a 5.5" RH ....... I would probably be a "one 44's" instead of three!

And if the four inch had been available then ...... I would have bought the four inch RH and be happy with just it.

AND .... I would never have known the awesome versatility of the .44 mag cartridge.

But I would have had one hell of a defensive revolver for woods carry.

My Smith:

My Mountain Gun is my absolute SWEETIE ........ and I coddle it more than the Rugers and for good reason.  Firstly it has a standard chamber like a Ruger SBH .....  and second:  It does not have the HEAVY frame of the Ruger DA's.

You asked about prices ...... both of my Rugers cost 395.00 .... one in 97 and the other in '00 ..... never regretted them either!

Viva the .44 mag revolver!

Good solid revolver, and long lasting.
Mine's been in My holster since 1983, after I sold My Super Blackhawk to help muster some funds.
It's helped Me take a few bucks and does, and always shoots well.

I've replaced the mainspring with a Wolff piece, plus I've changed a few angles inside the gun for a slick trigger.
Also, Steve Herrett built My (made_to_measure) walnut Trooper grips.......that was back when He was living.

Think that I paid $323 in October of 1983 for a new in the box gun, if that helps.

It is.....what it is...
