Hearing protection advice needed

I'm looking for a hearing protection product that costs around $50 to $150., the kind that has electronic amplification but quick cutoff of higher decibels.  Is there anybody out there with good first hand experience?  I want to use it primarily for hunting but also at the shooting range occasionally.  I know more expensive is usually better, but I can't afford a $2000. outfit.  I just want something that is effective, comfortable, and affordable.

I would second the Howard Leight but I can not get hold of them to get any advise or help in fixing one pair that was left on for a week and now will not turn back on.
The other pair is great and works fine.  Just don't lend them out to anyone.

Those are some excellent suggestions, and I really appreciate it.  ;D However, I happen to have some coupons to use at Dicks Sporting Goods, and wonder if Dicks carries a good hearing protector.  I'll have to check out Dicks on my next trip to Raleigh.  Right now, I am pretty much sold on the Howard Leight after reading reviews.  Getting a decent protector for less than $60. is really appealing.

the western safety brand carried by harbor freight work just fine for 10-25 bucks depending on the sale at the time. with the money saved you can buy ammo to try them out with.

I bought the Howard Leight brand mentioned above.  These seem very well made and do the job well.  Mark me down as completely pleased.  By the way, they are now on sale for $10. less.  Better hurry before the sale goes off.

I recommend that you always wear ear plugs along with ear muffs.  Your ears are worth the double protection.  I'm paying the price now for not being careful earlier in life.

I have the radians, they work well but the sound is kind of tinny. You get used to it though and none of the electronic ear muffs have high quality sound.

I was not happy with the product/customer service at peltor. I never got a chance to try them. Nowhere in the instruction manual or on line is there instructions how to put the batteries in. I called customer service and they only told me to remove the foam ring. How? I didn't want to start pulling on stuff and break them. Well I did judt that, I pulled the foam insert out and still could not get the batteries in. So I returned them and got the radians. I was goiung to go with the walkers but they were out of them.

I have a set of Peltor muffs I bought from Dillon in the 80`s that I still use. Better than sliced bread when handgun hunting or just shooting, but muff are not the best for rifle or shotgun shooting. There is a company E.A.R. that makes programable hearing aid type, but they cost alot more.

I have been using Peltor muffs that amplify sounds for my bad ears and also cuts off all sudden sounds like gunfire above 85 decibels.  Have had them for 7-8 years and believe I paid about $160.00 for them.  Living in Upstate NY, they also help keep my ears warm when the temperature drops to single digits during late deer season.
