I went to the range today and shot my Rossi Trifecta (youth stock) 20 gauge with Winchester Super X rifled slugs, 2 3/4", 3/4 oz, hollow points. They worked fine in the Rossi. However, since the gun is so light it kicked like a mule. In fact it knocked off my hearing protection twice. And it sounded like a cannon. Everyone at the range sort of looked up to see what was going on. Since it only has a bead front sight, and I had the cheek piece on, I couldn't really aim it well. Still, I hit my target twice out of the five shots at 50 yards. I pretty much ruined my frame. Sure does make a big hole (.61 cal I guess).
I was a bit concerned about shooting a slug through the smooth bore modified choke of the Rossi, but it looks like no harm was done. My only real concern now is the excessive amount of recoil. I shot it standing up so that helped. Shooting it on the bench would nearly rip your shoulder off! Definitely use recoil protection, and plenty of it. Next time I shoot it I'll take the cheek piece off and maybe install a rear sight. I'm not really looking to hunt with it or anything. Just punch paper. It's still fun making a lot of noise. And you know, maximum recoil is just plain fun at times.
