Several months ago Windows Automatic Updates  knocked out several computers in my area, including mine, and the repair shops were swamped reinstalling the OS.   Needless to say, I don't use the auto-update feature anymore.

Windows has always been a malicious hacker's paradise.  It's on almost every computer which makes it a target, but their code and security methods are generally pretty dismal just by design.

If you want something a little less error prone and secure, try out a Mac.  They're fast, snappy, and will do pretty much anything someone wants.  Only caveat is that you have to buy a computer from Apple to run it and they can run expensively (ok, well, you can technically tweak it to run on a "regular" computer but that's a discussion far too complex to undertake here :)).

Alternatively Linux is another option.  It's a community driven project where the code is written by volunteers.  It's "open source" which means that everyone is free to download, examine, and audit the code to check for bugs and errors.  Because of this it typically is far more secure than your average Windows machine.  Linux is typically made available through different "distributions".  Best of all, it's completely free and will work on just about anything.  If you're looking to try out a distribution Ubuntu Linux is a good place to start.

Just a disclaimer - if you're trying out Linux (or any OS) and installing from scratch then, as expected, it is going to completely reformat your computer in the process.  Make sure you backup any files you need to save before hand and then copy them back after you finish installing.

Internet security for a PC is easily achievable with good non-Microsoft software, most is freeware, see the sticky in the Computer & Internet Security Related Topics forum near the bottom of the index page. I use AdAware, Spybot, Avira and Zone Alarm as well as Mozilla's Firefox internet browser and Thunderbird email, have been problem free for years. If you're using MS Outlook Express, you can count on being very vulnerable. :'(

Good luck in restoring your PC.  ;)
