ELK & THE 41 BISLEY
« on: November 13, 2009, 04:07:43 AM »
Took this cow elk last weekend using my Bisley 41 magnum & a 250 WFN slug with 9.2 grs of Unique, haven't had time to run it over the clock but its probably running about 1100 fps, perhaps a little less.
My shot was 74 yds, lasered after she was down. The shot went through both shoulders & exited the offside & typical of cast slugs you could eat the bullet hole. Of the 27 elk I've taken this one was the largest, we figured her on the hoof at about 700 lbs, bigger than many bulls.
Additional power wouldn't have changed anything except produce more recoil, this usually reduces accuracy for most of us, some sixgunners are recoil proof. When I was younger I thought I was, I can still shoot the monster loads but in 45 years of taking big game with sixguns I've yet to recover a cast bullet.
This cow never took a single step, she just dropped on her brisket, her head came up & I walked down & gave her a finisher.
This was a cull hunt on private land, something I've never done before except in Africa but in Africa many of the ranches are bigger than many counties here in the states.

A very large cow elk, I weigh 280 lbs, she's slightly bigger!

Lots of lung damage & zero tracking.  ;D

The offside shoulder showing the exit of the 250 gr WFN.

The great 41 magnum Bisley & my ever present walking stick, the stocks are Holly that I make & the shoulder rig is the Northwest Hunter by Mike Barranti.

Sixshot, hats off to YOU and your 41-magnum! Yep, it just goes to show folks that you really don't need all that recoil and bullets weighing 500 grains to take an elk in the high country. Great pic's and love that pistol. 8) You put a nice shot on that cow and now you get the rewards the rest of the winter. ;D

Thanks guys, I recently read, maybe on one of the different forums about someone loading a 250 gr bullet to a pressure level of 29,800 & getting something like 1365 fps & by reducing the load by only 100 fps the drop in pressure was exactly 5,000 psi, to me thats a big pressure difference for only 100 fps velocity, hopefully some of you read the same story, I thought it was quite interesting.
As always I'll say that its an advantage to shoot the big guns if you can do it accurately & a big disadvantage if you can't! It doesn't take massive bullets & mega velocity to take game, big bullets yes, but the velocity isn't needed with the correct slugs.
My 41 magnum with either the 230 gr Keith or this new 250 gr LBT is an absolute hammer on game, mine has racked up a very good number of game especially with the 230 gr which I've had for many years. Good hunting to all.  :D Headed back to Montana next week for a rematch with the whitetails.

 Dick ,

That is some fine shooting and even better table fare, Congrats on the success...

I will always have a sweet spot in my heart for the old 41 , hell I have had 2 1/2 boxes of factory ammo that i have carted around for the last ten years till i get another one to shoot it all out of ;)

Till that time my old Ruger SBH 44mag will just have to make do  ;D She will be riding on my pack into the woods tomorrow , Though it will have to be the right situation for me to grab the SBH over the Marlin 444s Since the marlin hasnt been bloodied yet , But you never know ;)

handi243, actually 2 of the guys who hunted with me were from NC, yes both of them took elk, plus one guy from Maryland & another friend from Kansas, all handguns, yes they work pretty good.

sixshot, when I see accomplishments such as yours, with a 41 mag PISTOL, I just laugh at all the EXPERTS, that say rounds like the 3030 aren't enough for elk size animals. Some are probably dumb enough to tell you a 41 isn't enough.
Good job, and an EXCELLENT SHOT!

Me, too. I'm starting to run short on time.
Sixshot, that was a good story and I'm happy for you.  Just sold my 3-screw .41 to a grand fellow from Louisiana. It was unfired but for factory. Gave him four boxes of ammo I've had for years. 175gr, 230gr, 265gr (Corbon). I think he is enjoying the gun. I have just stayed with .44's and .45's; perhaps my mistake for not venturing into the world of the .41.

Just goes to show that bullet placement is most important. Beautiful pistol.
By the way, where did you get your walking stick from?   Jerry J

JK3006, my alloy is 5 parts lead & 2 parts linotype, I have lots of both & at the velocities I run them, about 1100 fps they work great, zero leading after shooting lots of rounds.

Jerry J, I have 3 of those walking sticks, they sure come in handy, if I'm going for a walk they are a good dog knocker  ;D, they've also saved me several times from slipping on a wet rock or log, etc, I never hunt without one. They are made by Boyds Gunstocks, they make several beautiful colors to choose from.

Here's my elk 2 years ago using a Ruger 45, you can see the stick in the photo.

Another shot showing one of my walking sticks & the great Barranti shoulder rig.
