Looks like an H&R American Safety Hammer. I don't think it actually has a model number, I believe it was just called the "Safety Hammer". Can't help you on the dates, but Wikipedia says manufacture dates from 1890 to 1941. HTH, Billy

Well, it's obviously the Double Action Safety Hammer version of the American Double Action - as stamped on the top strap. That serial number range was made in the mid 1930's. The Safety hammer was first patented in 1887 and fitted to the "Safety Hammer" variations up to 1942. First production of the American Double Action revolvers was in 1883-84 - it replaced the much more complex and costly to produce Model 1880. Your piece should be safe to fire any of the current factory loaded .38 S&W ammo - assuming it passes a "safe to fire" check-up. Nice piece - enjoy.
