scout scope mount for sks anyone have pictures
« on: December 15, 2009, 03:13:01 AM »
I have a winter scout scope mount project going! My son is into shooting the sks now + I'm reloading for it also! So I bought a 3 rail tactical mount at a gun show! took the upper hand guard off and am mounting between the stock/ barrel area and sanwiching the gas tube area with scope rail ontop of the gas tube! Fits like a glove! with the gas tube and scope as a unit can still be removed for cleaning! now for a pistol scope! If anyone has made this type of scout set up a picture would be great to view! With the scout mount hoping to keep the brass from dinging the scope on ejection! Hoping to fine tune my hand loads with a solid scope mount system

softpoint:  a scout scope needs the type of long eye relief that pistol scopes have and many scout scope set-ups use pistol scopes.  I believe there is a range of eye-relief distance that can be used, like 6" or 8" that might be used successfully.

I don't think you would be dinging the scope with brass if you try a scout scope set-up but the question is whether it would be stable enough for accurate shooting.  Those mounts 'pressure' against the front gas assembly when the rear sight locks them in place but I don't know how stable they are or if they can be made more stable.

One of our members used a receiver cover mount that he then drilled and tapped at the rails on either side of the mount and when he tightened the set screws he used on the mount it was rock solid.

HTH on accounta that's all I know about scopes and the SKS rifle.

I let Mikey go first....but my thought was the same.  Only set up I have to scope my SKS's is to use a Dust COver mount whichthen has 4 set screws to tighten the cover to the receiver instead of just be a dust cover.

I believe in my brain I have SEEN the scout set up in a picture somewhere but have no reason to recall it or where I saw it.  I believe the person used an Aimpoint or Red Dot scope.  I have scout set up son a number of rifles and enjoy them.  I like that nothing is permanently altered.  If I had more to go on I'd sure let you know.

The cover mount I have is a Norinco branded cover......took me a while to find it  :-\  so good luck if that is your route of choice.

The two most reliable setups are the drill and tap mount Choate and some of the various Russian setups or the scout mount as mentioned above that replace the rear sight leaf.  Any mount that is attached to a moving part, gas tube or rear cover will generally not hold accuracy of time as the part moves or wears.

Being your reloading as I do for the X39 you want to use a mount that is rock solid to take advantage of the increased accuracy of you handloaded ammo.  Any one of the above mentioned mounts will provide that all the rest is just the luck of the draw and anything that you have to remove and replace each time you clean your rifle will require you to rezero the scope or red dot.  For the drill and tap mounts a scope works well be aware though that most of the rear mounted scopes of any quality are long and want allow you to use stripper clips to load the rifle.  I find a good red dot such as the Bushnell or Tasco pro pointer design that uses the rings to mount to the rail on the Choate or scout mount to be the best also pay attention to the dot size the smaller the better 3 MOA is good up to 100 yds.  Anything larger just covers more area on the target.

Also on the Choate mount the base mount red dots like on the 40+mm sights want fit the rail because of it's delight that why you need to use the one's with the ring mounts.  On the scout mount you can use either.

I use a Choate on my Yugo
Linux Mint Mate 15
