I can find no distiction between the 500 and 500A. The Mossberg 500 series shotgun uses an aluminum receiver which takes little stress from firing but is fairly soft. Wear can become an issue with repeated takedown or even with extended use. I've seen some that allowed the bolt carrier to move under the stress of firing and the bolt would unlock in a violent manner. Not quite a 'blow open' but close. If the gun cycles OK then some looseness is normal if there is a question then a gunsmith should get involved or even a return trip to Mossberg. Also a call the O.F.Mossberg customer service is in order. I've posted a link to their website below.. Good luck and let us know how it works out.. I've had good luck with their customer service
