barrel swapping, what will and what wont

  On a model 10 in a .243 can you only change to a different barrel type as long as it's  a .243???   Or can you change it to another caliber?? (say a .223 or what else mite trade )

The way I understand it is you switch to any caliber as long as it uses the same case head size.
But also you can change the bolt face. On you model 10 its going to be a short action so any caliber thats in a short actionyou could use. the only thing you would have to worry about would be mag feeding.

Going to .223 you will also need to change the bolt face because it is a smaller rim.From .243  any short action with a .473 rim diameter you can do with just a barrel change.For example .22-250,7mm08,.260,250 savage ,300 savage,.308,.358 win. all will work with just the barrel change.

I am looking to rebarrel my savage 200 from .223 to larger caliber.  If you want to trade parts, let me know. Where are you finding the barrels?

     I just finished my first bbl. swap. I used the A&B barrel from Midway. 129.00. I used the Savage 110 Action, and put on a 35 Whelen bbl.
     Man what a shooter. It was a heavy contour (magnum weight) bbl. Used the Bell & Carlson Stock, (179.00) glass bedded, floated the bbl, reworked the trigger to 3#, using the original trigger and a piece of 40 thousand thickness trigger spring wire. Cut this from an old spinner bait.
     Replaced the bolt handle with an oversized one. Put a metal trigger guard in place. Mounted a Nikon 3x9x40 leupold with lepould base and rings.
     Man, do I ever have a nice rifle. Love to shoot this thing. Using reloads, with 200 gr Rem. round nose soft point under 57 gr of H 4895. I was extremely proud of my first bbl swap.
     It will not be my last.

Sounds like your project came out nice.  I just bought a 250 savage BBL from Midway, can wait to start working on this new project.

You sorta have goose bumps after head spacing and checking it a couple of dozen time. After I was certain I had it right, I put a piece of scotch tape on the back of the headspace gauge, and she would not allow the bolt to close. Yea I know I could have forced it, but that would have not given me what I wanted.
I am very happy with the Midway bbl.

where did you get the 260 barrel?

I did my Whelen a couple of years ago (A&B).  I got a small deer with it this year and the Whelen was certainly up to the task.  I think I can call it the deer gut-er.  I have since returned it to the 30-06 and am considering a 6.5-55 for next years season.

I also have a 7mm mag that I have swapped out to a 300rum for now.  These 2 platforms allow me a lot of options without having to change bolt heads, just use the correct size bolt when headspacing and shooting.  I was fortunate that once I got some good oak for my action vise, I was able to break the factory installed barrels and now I can change in a matter of about 15 minutes.

 I changed the bbl on my Savage 22-250 after 3000 rounds. One thing I learned was to take the scope bases off!! My receiver was hard to unsrew but it came off. Here I found out after it was off that a scope base screw was in far enough to just rub on the bbl threads and made removal hard!!

i've considered getting a stevens/savage 200 in SA just so i can rebarrel it to 338 Federal... now thats a round

I dont think so, check MidwayUSA web site.  Lately they have been cutting back on their offerings and seem to only come out with a batch periodically and when they are gone, thats all untill the next batch comes - if it comes.
