Lymans Whitworth mold question
« on: October 18, 2003, 05:05:23 PM »
Howdy Gang,

I'm new round here so bear with me please. (I usually hang out down in the CAS forums   )

Does anyone here have the Lyman Whitworth mold? If so can you tell me what diameter they drop from the mold? The reason I'm asking is that I looked it up in Midway catalogue and noted that they list it as a .457. If this is the case I may have a use fer it. But I don't think the Whitworth rifles were bored that big????

Howdy Mamaflinter!

I've missed seeing you on the boards too! Mostly my own fault though. I lost your web addy when I had a computer crash, and I got in trouble over on Carls board. Add to that the fact that I got heavily involved in CAS (won my catagory in our state championships this year) and I lost track of a lot of good folks!

It's almost deer season and I've been shootin my flinter a lot to get ready for this years trek!, though!  I'm kind of torn netween it and my old .54 cap gun, but I think the flinter is going to win out!

How ya been 'n wat ya bin up too?

Cuts Well I got in trouble on Carl's board too. I've been over there a few times, but seldom say anything. I just told him he should consider buying products taht are American made and told him about my job at that time. He insulted me by saying I should go out and find something else. The whole board went nuts.

I know you had dropped out of the loop for awhile but I didn't know why and had no way to get in touch with you.........

Good luck to you in deer season. I'm doing ok. I lost my job in 2001 so I took that opportunity to go back to school. I'm studying to become a school teacher. It's taking some time but I think I'll EVENTUALLY get there.

Hi
They do two moulds for the Whitworth.
One at .451 and the other at .454.
Cheers

Howdy CBK,

Yeah I looked at the Lyman site and noted that they shoow the Volunteer mold as a good one fer Whitworths, dropping at .451. But I recall that they show the Whitworth mold at .456 when cast from pure lead?

What I'm looking for is a bullet that will carry a LOT of lube and fit the bore on my 45-70. The Whitworth looks like it will fill the bill, IF it drops at .457 as stated in on the Midway and Brownells sites. (I do weird things with frontsuffer slugs, like my discovery that the .45 Maxi ball is a fantastic projectile for .45 Colt loaded with BP)

The Volunteer mould is 451114 and drops at .451.  A bullet mould you might want to consider is the 457121 (called the Whitworth).

I have the Volunteer.  Casts a great bullet for use in my White .451 muzzleloader.  The Whitworth mould also drops a great bullet for same but must be sized to .451.
