Appropriate 7mm load for hogs.
« on: December 14, 2009, 10:23:23 AM »
Hello Everyone,

I am going hunting for wild hogs in May and I will be carrying a 7mm Rem Mag. I was wondering if the reduced recoil load by Remington, shooting a 140 gr. corelokt at 2700 fps would be sufficient. Or should I shoot full power loads? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The reduced recoil should be fine.  Unless you're having to reach way out there (400yds+), 140grs at 2700 will be more than adequate.  If a 55gr .223 at 3000 will do it, your 7mm will.

Thank you very much jmayton. I think that is the load I will use as my shots will not be very long. I prefer to stay away from full strength 7mm loads if I can.

I've never found the 7 mag to be too unpleasant, but when I hunt hogs, I tend to shoot a lot . . . if things go my way, so I could see where it would be a problem.

That is the round my brother prefers and he shoots a lot of hogs. If I borrow his rifle I prefer the full loads in corelokt.
