My first outing with my H&R Ultra Varmint .223
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:13:56 PM »
Picked up one my first single shot rifle a couple weeks ago and was able to get it out to the range yesterday. I mounted my 6x18x40 Sweet 223 scope on it and fired away.

All target shots were at 100 meters. The pictures aren't the best, my wife has the better camera and she is out of town..

I put about 15 rounds of federal 55 grn bulk ammo through it, cleaning the barrell every 3 shots, and getting the scope pretty much dialed in. Then I let the barrell cool down while I finished sighting in my 30-30. Then went back for what I felt like were final adjustments. Here are my groups. They are not SUPER awesome, but I really have only shot rifles maybe 5 times.

All of these shots are with Remington UMC 55grn cartridges.

First group on this target

Second Group

Last group of the day.

I am hoping I can get out and try out some other types of ammo and once I start handloading maybe I can knock down the group size. I think this rifle is more than accurate enough for what I will be doing with it!

For not being a regular rifle shooter, and using a new gun without mods, shooting factory ammo. I would say you did pretty well. ;)

Alot of folks here wont admit it is good untill you show them 5 shots hidden by a dime ;D

Looks like you have a shooter there. With a little load development and tuning it should be a tack driver.

Looks good to me. Lots of rifles that cost way more money wouldn't do any better with factory ammo.

Good shooting. I bet when you start handloading your group will shrink. Please keep us updated.

Bet you could not put 5 in a dime with a 45-70.  Larry

Put 50-100 rounds thru it before you expect your best accuracy and don't clean it while you do your load development. Many Handis shoot better with dirty barrels, and don't clean it until you start to lose accuracy. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it has been discussed here many times. Good luck.

That's pretty good shooting at 100 meters right out of the box with a new gun with either an oiled and greasy, or sqeaky clean barrel. Congratulations on getting what I am sure will be an outstandingly accurate barrel as you break it in and determine what ammo it likes best. Nice shooting. I agree with previous poster- let it stay dirty as you break it in and see, many of the the handi barrels shoot better dirty! Right out of the box that is good shooting.

WELCOME TO GBO!!!

NICE SHOOTING THERE LARRY!!!

While I admit many barrels will shoot fine when dirty, breaking a barrel in REQUIRES CONSTANT CLEANING! After the break in, do what you will, but proper break in mandates cleaning...

Try some WIN white box ammo!! Many here find its the best accuracy they have ever found! Once you hand load, I have yet to see a 223 that hasn't liked a near max load of H322 powder and CCI BR primer and a Sierra 53Gr match bullet!!! ;D

Good shooting and good luck,
 CW

good shooting for your first time out with it, it will get better. i suggest you expirement with some different types of factory ammo, my heavy barrel 223 wasnt that fond of the remington umc 55 grain stuff, but shoots other types of factory ammo into much tighter groups.

Thanks for the welcome dudes. I think I might get out and throw some rounds through it tomorrow. I really like shooting it, and I can't wait till I start handloading my rounds. I have all sorts of bullets that I got. Some noslers, some winchesters, all sorts. I will try and find some WWB 223, but most of the stuff I can find in WWB is 45 grain varmit stuff.
