Dang! Too close!
« on: November 03, 2009, 05:19:10 AM »
I moved a stand almost two weeks ago to get closer to a trail from a swamp area into the woods where I hunt.  Plenty of does and yearling on this trail.  Went in about noon and moved the stand to take advantage of the trail.  Went back last night for first sit since moving.  In the 10 days or so since the move, the critters moved their exit!  When the nightly treck to the standing corn on top of the hill began, it was right beside me and under me!  Once the deer cleared the brush from the swamp, they were so close I couldn't even blink an eye let alone pull a bow back!  Some one should have told them to stick to the original!!   :D

Oh well, I'll give 'er another try Friday afternoon.

Best of luck to all, Arch

Arch, just curious.  You shoot a compound or a longbow?  I always longbow hunted til I couldn't and then got a crossbow permit.  But.....I don't trust it to kill....haven't used it.  Perhaps late season I'll try it.

Petemi,

If you get a decent xbow, you will be good to 30yds.  No reason to shoot farther than that anyway.  I have all the confidence in the world in my Excalibur.

Pete, I have a 30 year old Barnett that just got the job done in Oct @ 17 yards.  Remember.....it's the broadhead that does the real job.  The bow just helps putting it in the right spot.

Petemi: I use both longbows and recurves...well, I also use self bows.  Which bow I use in the fall just depends on what I pick up in the early spring and shoot over the summer at 3D shoots, etc.  This fall I am using a 60" recurve, thus the impossibility of moving to get into position for a shot with so many eyes were all around me and even under me!  I will be 66 on the next click of the calendar, but, thankfully I am still in good shape and able to handle my 60# bows.  I can sense a day coming though when I may move to a crossbow--I will hunt with something similar until the day I die!

Best of luck!  Arch
