What is this?
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:36:06 AM »
HI,

I am not a wildcatter and I have a question.  The brass fairy stopped by my place yesterday and left me 70 cases (66 loaded ones) that I would like to know what they are.  Description is:

Commerical 7.62 x 39mm brass that has been necked down to hold a .244 jacketed bullet.  Case neck has been significantly lengthened.  Shoulder has been flattened, maybe by fire forming.

The fellow who gave me this stuff said it these reloads from his father in law.  His father in law has ALTZ. so wouldn't be a good source of information at this point.

thanks

Tom

PS:  Photo is one of the reloads next to a Wolff steel case 7.62x39 - sorry for the bad picture

NOTE: bullet measured with calipers @ 0.244 inch

Why be difficult, when with a little extra effort you can be impossible?

Not 100% sure but that sounds like a .22 PPC.

The neck on the 22ppc is .285" long.  Some took the 220 laupa case that formed the 6ppc and and made it into a 22cal  and they wildcated by shorten the ppc case they were called Waldog/Shortdog the case body was shorten .085" to .100".  Using the 7.2x39 to form ppc and other wildcats was pretty popular back in the mid 80's.  What they might have done shorten the body but left the longer neck.  I almost forgot they also shorten the BR case.

Went looking for 22 PPC cartridge dimension and found a diagram of a 6MM PPC.  Looks similiar to what I have with the .243 bullet, not sure.
