What do you do? untagged traps

last year I was trapping on private ground, and someone set a 220 in a log about 20 feet from my snare.  The trap didn't have a tag (Required in KS) The land owner lets anyone hunt here, so the guy probably didn't ask to trap, but the landowner I'm sure didn't care who trapped. I just pulled my traps (was going to the next day anyway) and left.  I probably have left the guy a note about tagging traps, but I didn't want to go around badmouthing a trapper to landowners.  I was tempted to put a skinned raccoon in his trap, but I didn't.

BK,next time contact your local conservation officer.Let them handle something like that.And NEVER put a snned animal in another trappers trap,no matter what they do.As you said before ,other people such as hunters are allowed on this land.A carcass laying around will turn a lot of fence sitters,into anti-trappers.Also you might be subject to an exposed bait fine.  Tom

agree...call the conservation officer and if possible walk him over to the set. one I used to know would snap the offender's trap, then insert his business card between the jaws with a hand written note on back about illegal set without tag, etc. Next day or two all the offenders traps would magically dissapear from the immediate area. On one occasion the snapped trap just sat there about a month with no sign of being disturbed. the officer confiscated it and donated it to the local trappers organization since he had no evidence or proof for a case. he was a very cool guy to work with and appreciated the phone calls from more diligent sportsmen. I had a long time relationship like this with him before he retired.
