Remington 788 with "Mauser Action" in 308
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:38:43 PM »
Saw one today in my favorite shop! $468 New ITB, with a purdy Laminate stock! How does that Mauser action stack up? I like the looks of it and put some money down, cause i liked the looks and love the caliber. Give me some feed back on the rifle cause i'm sold on the caliber! Thanks in advance.

Btw I hear its discontinued by Remington.

The 788 did not have a Mauser action.  The 788 was discontinued by Remington a couple or three decades ago.  They are capable of some pretty crazy accuracy, and it's rumored that Remington discontinued them because they were more accurate than the more expensive 700, though I don't know how true that is.

The 798 does have a Mauser action.  The 798 is imported by Remington, made in Turkey.  My dad has a 798 in .308 Winchester that he bought used at a gun show.  Someone had done a poor job of restocking it, which caused the action to not work right.  He replaced the poorly done wood stock with a Hogue overmolded stock and the gun runs like a champ now.  Shoots Hornady 150 grain SST ammo into well under an inch at 100 yards.

Go figger!  Still its a looker, and if its a shooter then I guess i can deal with that. Mine has beautiful laminate Stock, that I may replace with "black un" to hunt with!

Thanks, Randy

Randy-

The Remington 798 is the old Interams / Charles Daly mauser action made in Yugoslavia (Serbia) and imported by Remington.  I Have one in the Charles Daly version, and it is a nice rifle.

Thanks Larry,

How does yours shoot?

I saw that "Remington" and 308 on the barrel and my eyes "glazed" over and reached for my wallet. I'm figgering to put a "lupe" on it and get it ready for P P P Porky at night!  I'll call it the "Turkish swine slayer"  ;)

Randy-

I have only tried mine with 165 grain Remington factory loads, and they shot about 1.25 inch from the bench, not bad at all for the only load tried.  I bought the rifle because I got a good price on it, and the quality of the metal work and finish.  Didn't need another '06, but the price was right, and I have a nice piece of walnut I have been thinking of using that is inletted for a Mauser action.  It has the factory plastic stock on it now, which seems well made, but not my cup of tea..  I have a soft spot for controlled round feed actions like the Mauser, Kimber, Ruger Mk.ll.  Good luck with yours.
