Medford school teacher loses again in bid to carry gun to school

A Medford high school teacher has lost another round in her bid to carry a concealed handgun to work.

The Oregon Court of Appeals concluded this week that a Jackson County trial court was correct to allow the Medford School District to forbid Shirley Katz from carrying her weapon to South Medford High.

Katz, who has a permit to carry a concealed firearm, sued the Medford School District for its policy forbidding employees from carrying guns on campus. She argued that state law allowed her to carry her 9mm Glock to work.

The trial court, and now the appeals court, disagreed.

"I think public entities throughout the state are really relieved and pleased by this outcome and school districts are particularly pleased," said Tim Gerking, the Medford district's lawyer.

School district officials have the right to regulate weapons on campus, Gerking said, and preventing students and employees from carrying guns to school was a matter of public safety.

Katz's lawyer, Jim Leuenberger,  said he was disappointed by Wednesday's decision, which gave his client 14 days to ask for reconsideration of the Court of Appeals decision and 35 days to appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court.

Leuenberger said he and Katz had not decided their next step.

The Oregon Firearms Educational Foundation, a nonprofit gun-rights organization, has paid $12,345 for Katz's legal expenses. The group's director, Kevin Starrett , said Thursday he was still studying the Court of Appeals decision and had not decided whether to encourage Katz to appeal.

That's the way it should be too, Dee. The Columbine and Virgina Tech episodes of the world might become a thing of the past if teachers or any CCW permit holders are allowed to carry on campus. At least the killing might be held to a minimum. I agree, Texas has it right on many issues.

no no, you guys got it all wrong

seatbelt fastening crack-downs (aka tickets), stoplight cameras, and red octagons with the magic word stop are never disobeyed.  just like those white rectangles that post a specific speed to not exceed, no one disobeys.  they don't do it because they think they'll be punished by a cop in oncoming traffic with a radar gun, they listen because of the magic sign.  murderers see those gun free zone signs, turn around and go to the nearest national guard drill post to kill people.  no one would ever try to hit a soft target like a school, full of soft targets like children and adult liberals. especially is that magic anti-gun talisman is putting up a forcefield to push awah evil nihilists that want to hurt society just to prove a point.  we need those in iraq and afghanistan, then obama can have his peace in the middle east because gun free zones will be jihad free zones... or maybe we need IED/carbomb free zones.. jihad free zones?

signs and regulations work!!!  the funny thing is that anti-gun and realist/patriot people are the ones fighting, the rest of the public isn't ideologically motivated and just do whatever the hell they want, good, evil or convenient.

what we need is corporal punishment like the middle east, when people mess up beat them or behead them.  THAT makes scumbags think twice.

Is that why middle east countries have been annihilating each other for about 7,000 years, because of corporal punishment? Doesn't seem to be working huh? Maybe the hand cutting off is just over kill in a effort to getting rid of the trigger finger.
We started turning our kids over to the federal school system in the 60s, and let someone else raise them on what to think. Now we don't like it? We started voting the "lessor of two evils" because we gave our individualism to the feds, and accepted the two party system as "the only way". Now we don't like what we got, but can't, or won't get out of that lie either, and what's worse we collectively JUSTIFY that lie, and condemn anyone who has rejected the lie, and give them the fault for the present state of affairs, while we COLLECTIVELY continue to drink the two party kool aid.
About 8 hours a day of evolution 5 days a week at school, and 1 to 2 hours a week of creationism IF we took them to church. That should confuse even the brightest kids. I was one of the confused for years. Not NOW!
