So, this past weekend was my fist elk hunt ever. Just moved to Colorado just over a year ago (from MI) and finally had a chance to live the life-long dream of pursuing the elusive wapiti.
I heard this big guy moving just 2 seconds before he came freight-training at full speed out of the black timber into a small clearing. Had about 2 seconds before he hit the next stand of timber and was able to hit a double lung shot at 125 yards before he disappeared for his final 150 yards of life. Used a new Marlin XS7 - .308win w/ 165gr. Nosler Partition topped with Bushnell Elite 3200 scope. Still feels like a dream - a true life highlight!
He had a broken 2nd tine so came out to be a 5x6 (the rear tines split into 2 small 1.6" points) - yielded a lot of meat though. Took him 3rd day of 2nd rifle season in the Flat Tops wilderness, west of Meeker.
Thanks for looking!
