6mm Br or 6x47 in contender g2
« on: November 25, 2009, 09:51:40 AM »
I was giving some thought to having a custom barrel made for my G2 in either 6mm Br or 6x47.  Would anyone know if they can be used in the g2  and does anyone have one?  Thanks, Gary

6mmBR can not... Encore only.   6X47 can be used on the Contender/G2 platforms.

I had a 18" Brown Precision custom 6X47 for my Contenders that I sold to a member here along with some dies (good reminder: I'll have to look, think I still have another set of dies I could put in the classifieds).
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

SSK has made 6 BR barrels for the Contender in the past. Not sure if they still will, you have to watch your pressures when you get to a case that size . Something on the 223 or 222 mag case would probably be a better option.

I won't say never, but I seriously doubt that JD ever chambered a Contender barrel for any of the BR cartridges - the case head thrust is simply too high and JD knows that.  It could have been an Encore barrel, but not a Contender.

Lonestar, Yes, Contender.  Would I personally want a Contender in 6 BR, no as I'd rather be able to load it to it's full potential. But, that doesn't mean they were never made. Same with the WSM series of cartriges in the Encore, will anyone NOW chamber one in an Encore ? I doubt it, but they were done by VV and others in the past.

SSK DID make some 6br barrels for the contender. they were marked "factory loads only". i had a chance at one once for $150 but was flat broke. ::) it would take careful reloading but might make a nice target barrel. of course neither factory loads in 6br or contender barrels in such are no longer.

i have a 6x47 custom contender 17 5/8" and fluted by on target technologies. i shoot it as a handgun. it is simply awesome! 75gr sierra hp around 2700fps with varget and is very accurate. i run 204 ruger brass into the 6x47 die to make my cases. of course 222magnum is the original case to make them from.

I'm the proud owner of Ladobe's old 6x47 bbl. Man, what a super light weight package it makes.
Thanks Larry.
 ;D

I also scored a big stash of unfired 222 Rem mag brass from another friend of mine in trade for some SMK's.
