Has anyone here been following the money they spend lately???
« on: November 26, 2009, 09:24:24 PM »
When I got my renewal notice for car insurance about two weeks ago, I also recieved an offer from the NRA.  I called them up and they wanted about 180 for a six month policy.  Progressive wanted only 120, and I've been with them since I was in the military (they have good rates for military guys and pacific marine credit union actually recommended them to me) so it seemed the natural choice.  here's the problem though, I've heard that george soros is either the owner or an investor in that business.  george soros is one of the elitist spooky guys the NRA is always blame to for funding anti-gun groups.  I don't have all the info but most of it is pretty reasonable.... and then it hit me THE COMPANY NAME IS PROGRESSIVE- EARLY 1900'S DEMOCRATS- same party but different name!!!!!  Look up some of the crap that they tried to push through congress back then too, they were all but out of the closet communists!  It made me sick to do it but I wasn't going to throw away money so I got progressive.... and it still bothers me.

Anyone else got a particularly flesh-crawling/revolting/disgusting story or confession like that?

Are you just assuming you'll save money with Progressive or did you do a thorough comparison of rates? All of the auto insurance companies claim to offer the lowest rates. Someone has to be lying.

From time to time I do a check of all the major companies to see who will provide me the lowest rates. Each time I've switched I lowered my bill by a few hundred bucks per year. Currently I'm with Allstate which is who I've had most of my adult life really. For perhaps 20 years I'd check annual and they always beat the rest then one year they didn't. Rates had climbed after they had to pay out big time for a hurricane in FL. I switched to GEICO for a $400 or so annual savings and stayed with them several years until they pissed me off over a claim on my comprehensive insurance that was no fault of my own.

A comparison of all the major carriers again showed Allstate by far the lowest so I switched back. I feel they all creep the rates up on you slowly over time and that every few years if you switch you'll likely lower rates even if at times it means going back where you had been earlier. Don't assume any one company is always the cheapest I can assure you from checking rates for me they are not. Progressive was actually the highest for me every time I checked.

When comparing rates be sure you are not comparing apples to oranges.  In other words are the coverages the same for personal injury, liability, will they pay for a rental while your car is in the shop? Are the deductibles the same?, etc.  Also check into their customer service rating.   Some outfits drag their feet when it comes to sending out an adjuster or paying off on a claim.  Some insist that you accept cheap ill fitting aftermarket parts instead of factory parts when your vehicle needs repair.  In other words there is more to look at than just the cost of the premium.

GB, I do the same thing. I was with State Farm for years, and they kept easing the rate up, so I switched to Geico and they blew State Farm out of the water, but same ole deal. Geico start punching the rate up, so I am at Allstate now.
As a side note, to which you and I have in the past ranted, NRA selling auto insurance and other so called bargains and always hawkin for more money is why I abandoned them.

dee you broke ranks with the nra?  you're a the real maverick (not mccain)

well for me it's dropped twice the last few years because of hitting 21 and 25 so I haven't seen the rates creep up.  also I don't wreck cars anymore so I just have liability only

for lots of vehicles and towing, AAA and such the nra deal DID sound good though.

are you guys with creeping rates insuring multiple vehicles and other property?  is it connected to your local property tax rates or is it just greedy people slowly putting the squeeze on you?  as dee will attest I'm young and sadly still ignorant to some things (not for lack of thinking and learning though) so educate me

any other money trails gone bad?

GB is right about insurance companies slowly raising rates on you. Insurance companies will give good rates to get new customers signed on. Then over time they gradually raise your rates.
I just got a quote from Erie and I would save 400 bucks a year going with them. Years ago I signed on with American National, who at the time was the cheapest around. They offered cash back in three year periods if you didn't turn in a claim. Just recently I hit a deer, it was more like the deer hit me. American National said sorry you don't qualify for the cash back, which I was just a month away from receiving.
I then decided to look around. I'm willing to bet that just about any insurance company I get a quote from, that their rates will be lower than what I'm paying now. Yes, I was comparing apples to apples, when I got the quote from Erie.
It does pay to change companies every so often.
