How is the hunting in Pa. going this fall????????
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:20:42 PM »
;) I visited with one of my college roomates, he is still trying for a fall turkey. Got a couple phesants... Nothing exceptional. Since my apartment that I stay in during the fall in Pa. is was up for sale, it didn't look like hunting time would amount to much this fall, but it was decided to keep it after all.... So looks like I will get a couple days in for the last week of turkey, bear season, some small game, and most of deer season.... So how IS the hunting in Pa. small game, turkey, the outlook for bear and deer season??????

Got some rabbits and pheasant. The boy put two deer in the freezer so we only need one more and I just found where the local turkey are roosting.  Life is GOOD!

My friend Barry who lives in PA got his muzzle loader doe on opening day of the early season and a turkey on opening day of turkey season as well. He is kinda half heartedly bow hunting again but isn't real serious about taking a buck as he is kinda wanting to use his .257 Whby Mag to take his buck this year.

He calls this rifle "the money pit". It was an original Roy Weatherby built rifle from the days before he came out with his own action. It didn't shoot well for him and had a messed up crown. A local gunsmith convinced him to let him put a new barrel on it rather than just recrowning the old one. He now has it shooting less than half inch at 100 yards for three shots and since he has so much money tied up in it he wants to take his buck with it this year.

I'll tell ya what I know about the southwest part of the state.  I've been doing some archery hunting the last couple of weeks with my crossbow.  Finally shot a nice doe on Monday, my first ever deer with any kind of bow.  Been seeing bucks practically every time out, but can't close the deal on a shooter.  Saw 2 pretty nice ones, one last Thursday, and one yesterday.  Last Thursday a nine point was following a doe and never slowed down long enough to take a shot.  Last night a bigger one (I think) was after a doe that passed 20 yds. in front of me.  The wind was different (from the north) and she winded me and blew the deal.  Saw at least 3 different 4 to 5 points as well.

Theres plenty of turkey, but little other small game other than squirrels around here.  Took my shotgun for a walk this afternoon thinking I might get a turkey, but couldn't find them.  I've been hearing them calling from my deer stands, so I know they're around.  The leaves were pretty crunchy today.  Did kick out another decent buck with a doe, so the rut hasn't totally ended yet.

A bear was killed by a car earlier in the week along I-79  in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh (Wexford exit).  Looking forward to going bear hunting up in Elk county in a couple of weeks.  My buddies son put out a trail camera near the camp.  Got a sow with a cub the first night, and another different bear later in the week.  I don't think he got any pictures of a deer the first week.

Good luck!

Jim
