S&W 500 Mag Handi video!
« on: November 25, 2009, 01:52:46 PM »
Well, I just picked up a 500 S&W mag barrel for my NEF frame a week or so ago. Finally got around to loading up some 300 grain Hornady Flex tip bullets behind 43 grains of W296. Lots of fun to shoot!

I have a youth synthetic stock set on it right now and the gun is pretty light. I thought the recoil would be much worse but surprisingly it wasn't to bad.

I didn't have the barrel fitted correctly the first few shots but after putting to shims on the lug/hinge pin area it fits up great. Enjoy the video!

The bark sounded worse than the bite.  At least on your end.  ;)

It honestly wasn't that bad! From my data the 300 grain bullet is going about 1700 FPS. I'm about to order some 700 grain cast bullets from "Ranger Rick". He runs them at about 1200 FPS.  :o

That thing's got a healthy kick to it. I've been thinking about getting one but the ammo is too costly. My dealer has one in stock. He's had it since last year.

Spanky-Pick it up! Trust me, I thought it would be to much recoil and it's a lot but not horrible. I thought ammo would be ridiculous also but if you reload then it's not that bad! I'm going to be buying some bullets from ranger ricks soon and that cut's cost a lot.

Worst case .... Sell it on here!

That doesn't look bad at all. I have a buddy with a custom .458 Lott (yes, he's been to Africa 3 times and another trip pending) that'll rock you much more than that, but in practice, it's not especially difficult to shoot. That Handi actually looks like fun.

I've been thinking of getting a Handi in .500 S&W...may have to get serious about it.

TxGun- You should! I love mine! I walked around the property with a buddy of mine with a Ruger 10/22 slung over my shoulder and the 500 Mag in my hand. The handi's are so light I didn't think twice about it! I will give you guys some more video's/pictures when I get some new bullets. I will also weight the handi and see what it weighs out of curiosity.

Get one!  I love mine.  It shoots 385 grain core lokts very accurately at 50 yards and I have only made a couple of alterations for accuracy to the gun.  I am sure this gun is more than adequate for anything I would ever think of shooting at.  It's a hoot to shoot, and not all that expensive to load for.  I use H110.

Kevin, that's their start load velocity from a pistol, rifle velocity will be a bit higher, I get 2150fps with a 350gr XTP, the same load in a pistol does about 1900fps.  ;) When you get out of the "trapdoor" loads, you'll notice considerable more recoil.  :D  The 700gr Ranger Ricks go 1430fps with a max load of Lil'gun in mine, about 50lbs recoil which is comparable to a 375 RUM or 416 Rem Mag.  ;D

I'm still waiting on cases for mine. For such a large caliber I wanted to stay with bigger bullets, but not quite as big as the 700gr. Especially now that Tim compared the recoil to a .375 RUM! LOL I have some CPB 500gr. gas checked bullets to try, but I haven't yet been able to find any load data for cast 500gr. bullets in the .500 S+W.

loks normal  recoil for a big bore handi,  sort of like a full house 45/70 load in one

Decent little fireball but nothing compared to my Mosin Nagant...
