Help me scope my Herrett
« on: November 29, 2009, 06:50:06 AM »
I'm looking for an optic for a 10" 357 Herrett.  I'd like something compact, low (or no) magnification.  I am leaning towards a short 1x or 2x LER scope.  I have never used red dots for any length of time but I could be tempted to try one.

For those of you with 10" brisk-recoiling bbls, what do you use?

thx in advance

Nate

I've got a bushnell trophy red dot... just took it off of my .44 to be put back on a .30 herrett when it arrives. I like alot!  The rings that came with it a pretty junky, but other than that it holds zero well and it's fairly easy to shoot with.  Since there's no magnification I think it helps me (newbie large handgun hunter) to shoot better because it doesn't magnify my errors.  After my first couple of range sessions with the .44, I was able to pull off about a 3" group at 50 yards, resting the barrel.  We'll see how she does with the ol' .30 in a few weeks!

I have recently become a fan of the Tasco ProClass line of scopes. Out of production but they are found in 1X and 2X for $50-$100. There is great feedback on them here on Graybeards forum.

Leupold M8-2X has long been my go to hunting scope for most of my 10" barrels.  Actual magnification is actually closer to 1.5 than 2.  It's a light, compact, clear and durable unit.  Most of mine have been purchased used on E-bay or Gunbroker....haven't had a problem with one yet.  Had'em on 45-70, 357Herrett, 44's, 41's, 45's, 30Herrett.  Also have the Burris 2X and would make the very same comments on them...the Leupold is a little more compact maybe.

The recoil of a 357 Herrett is really pretty mild and pretty much handgun scope from the major manufacturers should do.  I have a 3-9X T/C Recoil Proof scope on mine but a scope with a top magnification of 6X or 7X would do me fine in my opinion.  Remember, with a variable scope you can go down in magnification but with a low fixed power scope you can never go up.

I have a couple Leupold 2X EER scopes but don't use them much any more.  I found that for the hunting I do (75-150 yards) the 4X Leupold works much better.  I even shot one buck at under 5 yards with the 4X (called him in) so it is not useless at short range.

The .357 Herrett isn't the toughest-recoiling barrel especially with a scope, but with heavier bullets it can hurt cheap scopes.  A hunting buddy thought he'd save some money with a 2X Simmons on his 10" .357 Maximum (similar recoil to the Herrett).  He sighted-in just fine, but after the first shot at game (a fly-in hunt on Kodiak Island) the reticle broke.  We shared my .30 Herrett for the rest of the hunt.  His 'cheap scope' was not cheap in the long run....

I used a Leupold FX4 on mine, managed some nice groups at 100 yards in the 1.5" range.  I prefer a 4x scope on my handguns, and the Leupold is a good choice.
