Newbie to Encore's with ???'s
« on: December 02, 2009, 03:01:28 PM »
Hello All

I have been playing around with H&R Handirifle's for awhile now, but have been thinking about buying an Encore for sometime now and have finally decided to get one.I have been looking at the Pro Hunter frame and the standard frame. What are the differences between the two? Is the Pro Hunter Frame worth the extra cost I will most likely buy the frame itself in Pistol form and add a rifle stock and barrel. I have seriously been looking at the 30 TC and from what I have read it sounds like a good one. Do any of you guys have any experience with the 30 TC? Any other suggestions for a newbie starting out.

The only differences between a regular Encore frame and a Pro Hunter frame are the words "Pro Hunter" on the side of the Pro Hunter frame and the swing hammer.  Some like the swing hammer because it allegedly makes it easier to cock with a scope on it..  I'm big and have no trouble cocking Encores with scopes attached and no swing hammer however.  To me the type of frame makes no difference as long as it's stainless steel.

I have only read about the 30 TC and, in my opinion, it's the solution to a problem that doesn't exist.  The purported performance is obtained using powders not available to handloaders.  For Encore shooters it has NO advantage over the 308 Winchester and 30/06 Springfield cartridge and ammunition is less available and brass more expensive.  I wouldn't buy a 30 TC barrel unless it was VERY cheap.

The beauty of the encore is that with no action length to worry about you can use any cartridge length with no difference in rifle over all length.  So no reason to go 308 over 30/06.  Might as well for for the added umph and easier avaiabilty of ammo.  I'd say 30/06 if you want a 30 cal.

For the price difference, I would get a regular frame.  You can always put a hammer extension on it.  All of the accesories (stocks, barrels, etc) that are made for the prohunter are interchangeable on the regular frame.  I have a regular frame currently mounted with a prohunter barrel.  I love it.  It shoots the same as a prohunter and it costs less.
