Shooting the Hotchkiss 2-pounder mountain gun

Our stubby little lead bullets aren't very good-am going to make or have made a mold for zinc projectiles.  We used up some 130-year-old salvaged black powder, which seemed to shoot OK but also seemed to produce an unusually large amount of fouling.  Our experimental PVC and sand projectiles didn't work, they came apart just out of the bore I think.  They are probably way too long.

Good show!
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

This is the same model of gun as seen on that show, but not the same cannon.

Yes, we'd like to cast two-lb. zinc projectiles.  The stubby lead ones leave too much lead in the bore, plus they aren't stable enough-we're getting too much keyholing even  at 100 yards.  Some folks are using machined aluminum projectiles with the 2 pdr Hotchkiss, and getting very good accuracy.

 John,

Did you use a hole saw to make your sabot? If so, was a "guide" hole in it?

We had the same problem when using the sand filled PVC in our Mt. Howitzer. I believe our problem may have been blow thru of the guide hole on the sabot. I have not had a chance to make one without the hole to prove my theory. Maybe, the PVC is just too weak.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

How accurate was the projo with nipple on the end?

We didn't shoot enough rounds to see if there was any difference in the projo with or without the extension; in any case they all hit the target at 100 yds so they were both generally OK, but not super accurate.  I say this after asking the gunner where he was aiming, and unfortunately he chose various points of aim because I didn't tell him to aim at the bottom of the bullseye like I do.  That kind of makes a detailed analysis a waste of time.

Yes we do use a hole saw to make the sabots, but the 1/4" hole in the middle is then plugged by a 1/4 inch bolt, so no gas will get through that way.

Sand-filled PVC projectiles worked perfectly with our 65 mm Krupp; they were very accurate also.  They were about two calibers in length.  Our failed Hotchkiss 1.64-inch PVC projectiles were much longer in terms of calibers.  I think also I should have used a smaller powder charge for the PVC projectiles, to give them a little better chance to survive the launch environment.
