Wolf Illegally Killed in Iron County; Suspect to be Arraigned Nov. 30

by Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Contact:  Marc Pomroy 906-875-6622

Nov. 24, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that an arrest has been made in a wolf poaching case reported Nov. 17 in Iron County.

DNR conservation officers were contacted with reports of a dead wolf south of Iron River in Iron County on the evening of Nov. 17. Officers responding to the scene found a dead wolf dumped at the edge of a field that had apparently died of a gunshot wound. Evidence at the scene led the officers to a nearby hunting camp where a possible suspect was identified.

The suspect, who is from Green Bay and who had already returned home, was contacted by DNR conservation officers and agreed to return to Iron County to be served with arrest warrants and appear in court. The suspect will be arraigned in 95B District Court on Nov. 30, where it is expected he will be charged with illegally killing a wolf and hunting deer without a license.

The maximum penalty for poaching a wolf is 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000, or both, plus reimbursement of $1,500 to the state for killing an endangered species. The maximum fine for hunting without a license is $500.

Wolves are a federally protected species in Michigan and cannot legally be killed except in the defense of human life. Anyone with tips about wolf poaching or other hunting violations should call the DNR's Report All Poaching line, 24 hours a day, at 800-292-7800.

For more information about the case, contact Sgt. Marc Pomroy at (906) 875-6622.

Do those fines and penalties go directly to DNR or do they roll into the General Fund?

Anyone too cheap to pay his fair share and buy a license does not have my sympathy.  The only exception to that would be someone struggling to hang on to his home and feed his family.  It doesn't sound like that in this case......just another slob hunter.

No comment on the wolf.

Nonresident firearm deer license in Michigan is $138.00.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363_14518-173829--,00.html

I don’t have any sympathy for anyone hunting without a license.

Now he can pay $3000.00 and 3 months in jail.

No there are no wolf tags in Upper Michigan.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12145_12205-32569--,00.html

I wondering if he thought is was a coyote.  I seriously doubt he read the Michigan hunting guide.  Well coyote hunting in Zone 1 is closed Nov 15-30.

Zone 1 is the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan and that is where Iron County is located.

No license makes him a poacher pure and simple. On the wolf thing, never encountered one, I understand they don't have a lot of friends among farmers, ranchers and sportsmen.

He shot a wolf. Never said he was hunting deer. ;D But since he didn't have a deer license I will refrain on the contribution. We heard one at hunting camp last week near Phillips Wisconsin. First sign of a wolf since I got one on the trail cam in June. The deer moved real nice in the daytime even in the warm weather without wolves around.

Just to clarify. I meant no hunting license for deer, which I believe was why he was hunting there.

One must be prudent when hunting in an area that has such prevalent Politically correct guidelines for dispatching varmints. Basically GET A LICENSE, hunt Deer, and if you happen to get a chance to thin the wolf gene pool, be careful to not leave a trail of evidence to your door......... oh!! and you might want to speak to your "friends" about their loyalty. but maybe they did not like the "no license" thing either.

Wisconsin man pleads guilty in wolf poaching

Here's a follow up on the story:

Wisconsin man pleads guilty in wolf poaching

By The Associated Press

November 30, 2009

A Wisconsin man has admitted poaching a wolf in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Thirty-seven-year-old Stephen Popp Jr. of Green Bay pleaded guilty Monday in Iron County Trial Court to misdemeanor charges of killing an endangered species and hunting without a license.

Judge C. Joseph Schwedler scheduled sentencing for Dec. 28. Popp could get up to 90 days in jail or be fined up to $1,000.

Wolves are a federally protected species in Michigan and cannot be killed except in defense of human life.

Conservation officers with the state Department of Natural Resources found the wolf Nov. 17 at the edge of a field south of Iron River.

They said evidence at the scene led them to a nearby hunting camp, where a suspect was identified.

There should be additional charges of plain stupidity filed and pled!! but then the jails would surely be overcrowded  ;)
