Handi 17HMR vs CZ 452 Varmint 17HMR
« on: November 19, 2009, 06:18:10 AM »
My wife is gonna get me a 17 for CHRISTmas. I know these are not at all in the same price range but i must admit the handi is appealing for the price. What i want to know is which one of these rifles will be the better shooter. Based on functionality alone how does the handi do against the CZ?

I have a handi M2 and it shoots better than me.  With the lot of ammo it likes, it will stackem at 100yds with not wind of course.

Just got a Savage M2 have not shot it yet so I can't tell you about it, but we'll see :)

look at the Marlins, The CZs are nicer looking, but they are no more accurate.
And you could buy a lot of ammo for the difference in price.

I have a CZ Training Rifle and it is the same rifle as a LUX model.  THe only difference is that the stock is Birch instead of walnut.  I love it b/c I shoot open sights.  But you can put a scope on it too.  The 452 training rifle is the cheapest model, got mine for $325 out the door.  Shoots great and I would have to say that with WOLF match Target it shoots better than my Marlin 25N.  The Marlin does shoot good though and I got it for $100.

I have a Mariln 917V. It is a shooter. I do have flyers but in most cases I can cover 3 shot groups with a dime at 100 yards. ;D Dale

The 17HMR shoots very well in almost any rifle... most of them better than MOA at 100 (and some much, much better).   So cost and appeal is probably what will make your choice.

If it were me, I'd go for the CZ hands down ( ;) ).

Had a chance to buy the marlin 917 with the heavy barrel and carbon fiber stock for 300 but passed base on some iffy reviews.

I've owned a total of four .17HMR rifles. First was a Ruger and it was followed by a Savage and a Marlin I forget which was second and which third. Last was a CZ.

My accuracy standard for this rifle is five shots under an inch. None of the first three came close to meeting my standard. The Marlin was the worst of the lot really and could not be sighted in even at 25 yards. Using Burris Signature rings and the 20 offset inserts in BOTH rings it still could not be made to shoot to POA at 25 yards. The Savage wasn't much better. The Ruger was best shooting occasional 1.5" to 2" groups but no better. I never fired the CZ before deciding to sell it and the person who bought it from me also sold it without firing it he said so I don't know how it would have done.

I will have another one day it might be a CZ or it might be an Anchutz but it won't be a Ruger, Savage or Marlin I can promise you that.

I have four 17hmrs, a Marlin 917V and 917VS, both with Rifle Basix triggers, a CZ452 American with an AS adjustable sear and a Sportster with a good 3lb trigger job, they all shoot under 1" with their preferred ammo, the 917V shoots best with the Federal 17gr Vmax, the 917VS likes Hornady Vmax, the CZ shoots Speer TNTs best, and the Sportster likes Remington ammo.   ;) My huntin partner has a 917V also, his shoots the Federal Vmax even better than mine, the last 100yd 5-shot group he shot was one hole that measured under ¼", he's a better shot than me on any given day tho!!  :D

If money is not a problem, go with the CZ452, they are really nice.  If money is a problem, get the Handi.  The only problem with the Handi that I had was the weight.  I also had a Ruger 77/17, and am now shooting a Contender Carbine with a 23" barrel.  They were all very accurate!

Not knocking the other rifles mentioned but, "all things considered," i`d pick the CZ hands down.
