« on: December 25, 2007, 02:46:59 PM »
Hi All,

Looking to book another trip to NEWFI for a Moose, caribou, bear combo hunt in 2009.  I've been before and was luke warm regarding the outfitter.  Any suggestions based on your experience???

I'm going this year to the north penninsula with a fella who bought out half a former biz and supposedly he's so honest its painful. Last year was his first year solo and from what I've heard from those who went was they were treated amazingly fair and all got moose. The price was mid three's all in....If you wanta email me I'll keep you on file and let you know  dougl@nrtco.net

Make your plans and get a price on butchering and meat shipment before you go. If you don't, take plenty of Vasaline. The hunting is great, but watch the weather. Bad weather can set in and stay long enough to ruin your hunt. I have only been once and did okay, but if I had waited another day, I would not have got to finance the butchers retirement.

I hunted with Long Range Outfitters. We had 4 guy in our party, all 4 got Moose. Their web site is Hunt-a-Moose.com. My advise is to be in good physical shape,as there is alot of walking up and down thru thick muck and tuckamore. I would hunt with them again

Whenever hunting Newfoundland, you need good raingear and two pairs of insulated hi-top rubber boots, such as those made by Kamik. The ones with the felt liners. We've got a lot of boggy/marshy ground and that is where the Moose prefer to hangout. You are going to get wet and you are going to step in bog holes. Thus, the extra pair of boots or at least extra liners. Wear one pr while the other dries.

Most local butchers will cut and wrap your meat (on styrofoam trays) for about a dollar CDN per lb.

That's only 27 more years Doug, that doesn't sound like long enough to draw one to me.

Doug, you will most likely be able to draw and spend that first check before getting that moose tag! ;D ;D

My son n law's dad has been waiting forever to get a permit and he says, I thought I would have gotten one before I retired and that was 3 years ago. :'(  :'(  :'(

I have been applying here in Maine for 21 years and have yet to be drawn. >:( My mother got drawn last year and let my son shoot the moose as she said he would probably never be drawn and he shot a dandy 700 pound 39" moose. THEN this year he got drawn on his fifth time sending in and he got a great bull this year, 850 lbs 41" spread. I told him not to plan on shooting two moose in two years again for a long time. ;D ;D Hang in there you just never do know when it will happen.  I'm still waiting.  8) 8)

They should have used that luck on a big ticket lottery instead. They've used up their life time quota.

Hey Doug!  You do all the leg work and I'll join you for that Nefie hunt!  That way if you pick a bad outfitter it's all on you!   ;D

Ima tryin to get the time to PM you Doug, but the short answer to your last question is yes!   ;D  Kathie also, but she doesn't understand that it appears the area isn't much for the spa/massages/shopping/I wanna do girly stuff crowd.   ::)
