Looking for some hunting loads for 44 mag
« on: December 04, 2009, 12:02:31 PM »
I'm wondering where I can find some hunting loads for the 44mag Marlin lever.  Can it be loaded somewhat hotter than regular pistol loads (thats all I can find)?  I have some 2400 and win296 and 240gr xtps.

Thanks,
Bobby

With the rifle the velocity will increase over the standard handgun round.
a 1200 FPS 240 grain  jacketed bullet out of a 6" handgun will be above 1500 or higher.
Hotter loads may not be needed to shoot deer or other similar game at short range. (10 -75 yards)
You can also go to the lighter 180 grain loads that start out in a handgun around 1600 FPS and will be almot 2,000 FPS out of a rifle.
a 16- 20" arrel will maximise your velocity.

+1 on what mcwoodduck said. With the extra FPS you'll get by shooting them in a rifle a "hot" load isn't necessary. Find a load that your rifle likes and just have fun with it.

I am a fan of 21 grns of IMR 4227 with that bullet in my Marlin CB 24". Shoots plenty accurate and killed the one deer I shot with it as quick as anything I ever hit a deer with.

My hunting load for my M629 is a 240gr XTP over 23.5 gr. of H110/W296 and a WLP primer. Very accurate and very consistent. Make sure you use a  firm crimp with it. For everyday @ the range I bump it down to 23 gr.
