Simmons 2.5 x 20mm shotgun scope
« on: December 06, 2009, 03:29:41 AM »
i'd like to try one of these scopes, sounds like a lot of you guys have used em on your handi's. I like the idea of mounting it in front of the hammer and have read about the use of the ultra rail...can you also mount it on the standard handi scope base using offset rings? Anybody know a vendor that has em in stock now?    Mike

I have a couple, one is fine the other is not quite as good but works OK, especially for $19.95. Try googleing "Simmons 2.5 x 20mm shotgun scope" to see who has them now...
The eye relief may be a bit short to mount to far forward....<><....:)

You could also try the Tasco bantem 2.5X20 shot gun scope. I've had mine on everything from my 357 mag to 12ga slug gun with no problems, and you can get them at walmart.

I find they work OK and better with the WEAVER base as it actually leaves room for the eye piece. the rear of the scope is in front of the hammer mounted with the lowest rings you can find.

It should be OK with the 45-70, but remember its a $20 scope.. don't expect a life times abuse from it.

What! $20.00 scope might not last on a Handi 45/70. ;D
I think i may try one, if they will work on a shotgun maybe they will last a while.
should be perfect for 150-200yds with my old eyes.

I think only one person here has had one of the 8-point 2½x20 scopes fail, and I think he has several of them, so the odds go up I spose!  ;D

I got 5 of em and no trouble with any of em.  45-70 and 444 Marlin are the 2 heaviest kickers they are mounted on, with them being fixed power, light weight and shotgun scopes,  I don't think they will give up to soon.  DP

my 1st 2.5x20 simmons is on my 12ga pardner shoot'n 3" brenneke
rifled slugs from it. i have used it for over 5 years and to this day
it holds perfect. and i guarantee you it recoils 3x as bad as my 45/70
travel'n at 1980 fps. if it ever fails... i will put another on it, if it fails !!
prolly roun 200 brenneke's have been put thru it.

my huntsman gets charged with 3 pellets shoot'n a saboted .458 sjhp
(same bullet i use in my 45/70) and it is still alive and well after over
300 shots. if it ever fails... i will put another on it, if it fails !!

i had a leupold fx-2 pistol scope on my .460s&w pistol that came apart
after 10 shots....it now wears a trijicon rp and its holding great after
several hundred shots.

just goes to show you... they all can fail, no matter what the price.
or what the sales pitch is......

take a chance, i will continue to ;D

You guys are astounding me ::) ::)  I haven't thought about a 20 mm scope since my Red Ryder wore out a few weeks ago.....no....it's gotta be longer ago than that...can't remember. ??? ::) ???  Here is a group of very knowledgeable people ALL saying very good things about this tiny tube.  I guess I'm glad to have learned something this morning.  Ya see, it's never too late for that. ;)

Man, you guys are great!!!!

Another reason I love this forum, because if I posted a question like the above on any other forum about a cheap scope, or even gave the impression that I used one, I would have been flammed mercilessly, and would have smelled like burnt toast for a week! ;D

That's most of what I always use, and have had very few that actually failed me, and that has been a while back.   I've also got a couple of Bushnell Banners which I would be hard pressed to part with! ;)

Nothing wrong with those top of the line scopes, and don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing them, it's just that you get what you pay (out the gazoo) for! :o

Besides look at it this way, what you save on a scope you can buy another Handi! ;D

The Simmons is perched atop my Mossy 500 at this moment, ready to jump back on the 45-70 when I get time.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Well my pro diamond that is now on my 45/70 was once on my 870 supermag turkey gun.  I would guess that I shot at least 40 or more 3.5" turkey loads and that scope never lost zero.  There is a whole lot of recoil coming from those loads and it held up.  It does try to fog over easily when going from a warm house to a cold vehicle.  It also has 1/2" clicks, which I don't prefer.  But all in all it has been more than worth it's money and I would recommend one for sure.

Jimbo I've got a bunch of the bushnell banners for the money they are great scopes I only started going to the Nikon prostaffs when I really started getting into handi's cause i'm able to use lower scope rings with the Nikons.
Turkeyeye yeah the 1/2" adjusments kid of messed with me to when I first put the scope on my kids 20ga mossy 500. Now it lives on a Rossi 357 mag and makes a great brush gun.
