Win model 94 spare part
« on: December 02, 2004, 05:08:00 AM »
A friend has lost the rear sight ramp adjustment insert for their Winchester Model 94.  What is the best way to obtain a replacement for this ramp adjustment insert?  Also, is there any good trick to avoiding losing these inserts?

Depending on the age of the rifle a local smith should have one.  You can also purchase them from Brownells or from Winchester...  as well as other parts houses././

However, all sight elevators are not created equal - some being of a different thickness than others.

I would measure the slot width on your longleaf sight, so a step elevator would at least fit in there, if not the step's height/spacing  matching the ballistics of your chambering.

It is correct that the slot width should consider in the purchase. A gunsmith will most likely have a kit containing many elevators of various sizes. Be aware that in the past these were also made in several styles, some of which are no longer available. There were some that had a button that allowed for easier purchase of the thumb for adjustment and some that has 2 sets of steps to elevate the rear sight. These latter straddled the sight stem much like a 'U' channel and were a lot less likely to be lost. But all require the filing of the steps(usually) to fine tune the zero of the rifle. If for no other reason than the variances in the way people see the sight picture.. Some of these styloes are no longer made but can still be found at auction sights and parts houses. The trough style elevators are still made and availanle from Brownells..

First off, I would use various sized shims such as matches pieces of cardboard etc. and test fire until I found the proper height.
I would then locate a piece of sheet steel of the right thickness and go ahead and make one. A step or two either side of the selected height would be ideal. Using a file on a thin strip of steel is a rather simple task. A little sanding, buffing, bluing and.. wallah; satisfaction in a job well done..an act of self-sufficency.

A little taper toward a notch will help to retain the elevator. Below, see method of measuring correct height and the shape to file the elevator. Notice each step is angled to form a notch, so the elevator will stay in place. I also showed a notched thumb-grip area to slide the elevator with. Before finishing take it to the range with a file and do "final" adjustments...may work better than a factory "will fit".
Keep in mind, the notch and thus the height measurement should be dirtectly under the v ertical sight blade.
