What can you do with a 7.7 Jap

  I know the 6.5 jap. can be reemed out to 6.5x 257 Roberts without a lot of work. Is there anything you can easily do with the 7.7 jap to make ammo easier to reload without replacing the barrel.

no. nothing that i know of. its an odd one in .311"

you can load quite effectively for it.

  Ok now you have my attention. What do you call "Quite effectively"  Assuming that the barrel is good and I put a Timney trigger under it, how will these beasts shoot?
   What kind of bullets are available and what weights and ranges.

It will do anything a .303 British will do. Same bullets as a .303, case capacity about the same as a .30-06. Reloading components very available. I'd love to have an old Arisaka. How accurate is it? Ask some of the WWII vets that had to face it.

The Arisaka is actually a very strong action. In tests conducted after the end of WW II by U.S. Military ordinance experts, the Arisaka was found to be the strongest service rifle action of the war.

Can't resist.  The barrels make excellent horseshoe stakes.  That's what my smith recommended I do with a 700 barrel that had gone sour.

If your 7.7 has a good bore in it they can be made to really shoot. If it is an unaltered military rifle DON'T hack it up. Some collector would like to have it. Many of these rifles have been hacked up and the price of unaltered in good shape shooter grade rifles has gone up considerably in the last couple years. Like has been said the actions on these Type 99 rifles are super strong. I have seen some really good looking and shooting sporter rifles made from them. With the right loads they will take anything from a mouse to a moose.

If it still has the mum on it I would definately not mess with it. Most I think were ground off. Mine was anyway.

  Ray, I have found a 7.7 sporter with the butter knife bolt. It has an after market stock but the military trigger. I know timney has side safety triggers for the type 38, do they also have them for the 99.

Yes - Timney has a trigger for the 7.7 with a safety.  However, I've not heard from anyone that has tried one.

My rifle above has a Huber Concepts trigger.  If I had knowed of the Timney before using the Huber, I probably would have tried it instead.

My first centerfire rifle was a 7.7.
Ammo was pricey way back then, still is.
I had a neighbor who taught me to reload as a kid.
Having that skill in hand I bought the Arisaka.

It had been sporterized before I got it.
Looked a whole lot like any other rifle out there.
They did a decent job on it and added a Lyman peep sight on it.

As long as I did my part it shot very well.
Back then I didn't shoot paper targets.
We would stick styrofoam coffee cups on a tree limb.
That old war dog knocked them off that limb all day.

Now days it's just a short range plinker for me.
I've reloaded for it over the years and have enjoyed shooting it.
As stated they are extremely well built actions, mines never shown any concerns for me.
