sights on 22 Hornet
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:04:10 PM »
Opinions requested.  I inherited my older brother's Handi .22 Hornet.  It's an old one with a Simmons 4X scope.  I like peep sights better than scopes on Handi Rifles (yeah, that's weird), but I'm wondering if the combination I've installed will work. I'm hoping some veterans here will have tried this before.

My new Buffalo Classic came with a Williams sight; I've replaced that with a Foolproof model.  So, I put the factory BC sight on the .22 Hornet, and among my junk, I found an original H&R post front sight, and I installed it on the Hornet.  The sight picture is great but . . .

Do you think that combination will work, or will I need a different height front sight?

Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

This is the lazy way out of a problem, I know.  I looked at the FAQ and Brownells sight height calculation, but thought perhaps some of you might have tried this and would know the answer.  I never was good at math.

I have a Handi 22 Hornet with the exact same rear sight.  My front sight is exactly .955" above the exact center of the rifle bore (not from the top of the barrel).  My Handi will zero at 100 yards now with the rear sight all the way down.  If you want a little room to maneuver the rear sight then use a front sight slightly taller.

measure the diameter of the barrel at the breech, then divide that measurement in half....add the height of rear sight above barrel with the peep in the middle of it's elevation adjustment(about .480)....then measure muzzle diameter, divide it by half, and subtract that from the total of the two breech measurements and the result is the height of the front sight needed........
