.445 SuperMag Test drive
« on: October 12, 2003, 03:31:52 PM »
I took my SuperMag to the range today for the first time.

I put around 50rds through it and am VERY impressed.  I was using 240gr JHP's over either 34.1 or 36.5gr of AA1680.

First observation.  This gun is VERY powerful.  'Nuff said!
Second.  Recoil is VERY managable.  It's strong, but not at all painful or difficult to manage.  The gun is quite pleasant to shoot.
Third.  Accuracy.  It's a DW.  'Nuff said.  I was able to easily make 'kill shots' on the paper at 50yds from a standing, freehand hold.

If you get a chance, buy one of these.

Now where are those pigs?!?!

BigdaddyB,  How do you like using AA1680?   I am going to try some out do to H110 makes a mess with my DIllon xl 650 when it auto indexes as the H110 spills all over.  I was tolk by dillon customer service to try another powder like ball powder. SO I am going to give AA1680 a shot. Did you have a chance to chrono these loads.  I went to accurates site and got loads for the 445 supermag from them but don't know how accurate these loads are with what they published.

I also have a Dan Wesson 445 supermag.  I wish I was where you can hunt some of those piggies.  I would love to test it out on a nice big fat mean nasty piggey.   :-D .

Well good luck with yours and let us know if you put your 445 up agains a pig.

Good luck

Brian

My first opinion of my new 414SM is very similar to yours Big Daddy but I like the way you've phrased everything.

I've been looking for some AA1680, none around here and I don't want to mail order it.  I've a Sierra Handgun Manual, it has plenty of 445 data.  However, they only reference 3 or 4 powders for it's use, same with the 414SM data.   I'm currently working with Lil'Gun data I got from DW's site.

Wouldn't mind bustin some porkers myself.

Later and good luck!
Rob

Are you using the large or small charge bar?

I tried using the small charge bar, but it made a HUGE mess.  The large bar works great with the AA1680 on my RL550.  I originally went with the AA1680 because I'm not looking to push this load to the bitter edge of what the Starline brass can handle.  I've also heard that H110 is much worse for flame-cutting on the frame.

I don't own a chrono, but I got the definate impression that this thing would stop anything that walks this side of the planet!

BigdaddyB,  I am using the large charging bar.  As the small one was too small to handle the large powder volume that the 445 takes.  I have to get me a chronograph to check what my loads are doing.

I called DIllon's customer service to ask what they think about the H110 spilling all over or atleast it is coming out of my already charged cases before I put my bullet on the case mouth. So Dillon said its the powder and try to use some type of Ball powder and that is why I am going to try AA1680 and see how it works.  I have lil gun too and H4227 and will see what happens with them.

Oh one more thing check out Accurates link here for more AA1680 load data if you didn't already. See below.  just cut copy past if it doesn't come out as a direct link.

Good luck and have fun.

We both have the same initials  LOL
