.243 problems
« on: December 04, 2009, 05:14:38 AM »
Hello all. I'am new to the site, but been browseing for months now. Lots of great info here and hopeing for some positive advice. First of all I purchased a Handi .243 standard barrel about 5 years ago. When I first got the gun I had a buddy do some hand loads and the gun shot very well. I had 1" groups at 100. After time I ran out of hand loads and bought factory. The wife shot the gun at the range and could not get good groups, so I gave it a try and same results. We put the gun away and tried again the next year and had very poor groups. 10 " groups were not uncommon. I have now done everything possible to correct it. I have gone through tightning the mounts, tighten rings. I even tried different scopes. I played with the forend (rings, shims) and even shot without the forestock. We have cleaned the barrel very well. I used JB bore paste, sweets and no better. I checked  hinge spaceing and movement. We have now had tried two different guys with hand loads and no consistent results. We tried original hand load recipe and others. I'am letting the barrel cool between shoots. Many times we can get two shoots very close to each other and then the third is a complete flyer. About 6-10" away from the others. When I shot without the forestock I have the first two shoots within an inch and the next two were within a inch but both sets were 4" apart. The next two were about 2 inches apart, but another 3" away from the other two sets. Really, were do I go next with this gun. My hands are up in the air and spent way to much money already on loads to get it to work. I'am ready to sell it for cheap. The reason I'am putting so much effort into it, is because It shot like a dandy the first year I had it. I live in Canada and warranty repair is a problem and don't want to spend alot more money on it. Anyone got some dirrection on what to do. Thanks...

Welcome! First make sure the latch and shelf are clean and dry(Handi Basics 101), and make sure the barrel is tight without the forend on when the action is closed. Sometimes the high pressure barrels will cause the underlug to set back after a lot of shooting, doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen, when the forend is installed, it will mask a loose barrel.

Like Tim said clean the chamber and latch shelf, and the barrel needs to lock up tight with the forend on or off.

A couple of "Q" tips and a little alcohol are your friend if you own a Handi Rifle, and just swab the latch shelf and chamber and that's it!

I just got back from the range with my new to me .243 ultra that I put together yesterday from a barrel I bought on the classifieds.   It fit my receiver perfectly, and locked up tight as a bank vault, so I ran a couple patches through the bore and cleaned the latch shelf and chamber, and headed to the range this morning with a box of Federal 85 grain Sierra game kings, and after getting it sighted in, it shoots 1" consistently at 100 yards.

I'm now a believer in the .243! ;D

I have a last idea before you sell it try changing the scope.
I had a 243 cal. that will print outstanding goups then it all starting going south 6" to 10" group:I tried everything turn out it was the scope saying good buy.
I was lucky to think of it only because I have a 30-06 that really can shoot and I mean tack drive bullets in the same hole .I had noiced my group sarting to open 2" instead of .500 and with each rage session it open even more,I did notice looking threw the cross hair they had canted to the right.long story short replaced the scope and it started to tack drive rounds again.I also change the scope on the 243  and it shot great.so I would last resort try another scope.
243 cal.

Have you checked the crown of the barrel. Check the side to side without the foreend (as tim said) hold the end of the barrel and the stock with the other hand and wiggle. There should be no movement. If their is any side play shimming woulld in order. Make sure your mount hasn't come loose, rings and then scope. Walk through the FAQ's go from step a to z
