Remington model 700 & Factory ammo (7mm mag)
« on: March 01, 2010, 12:11:12 PM »
If anyone can point me in a direction for picking a factory round that shoots well in this combo, that would be appreciated. It's not going to be a gun that gets shot enough for me to get dies & components to work up a hand load. Probably looking to shoot 150-160 gr bullets, willing to look at most any hunting bullet. Premium or mid grade, as long as it shoots I'll be happy.

I know each gun can be different, but if there seems to be one round that works well for several people, might save me some money.
Thanks

For deer size game, the Remington Core-Lokt is hard to beat.  I use 140-150 grain bullets in mine for deer.  I don't shoot magnums much any more.

It would be for bear/elk. Maybe mule deer. I've had a few chances to hunt out west, so far I've only taken my bow. If a gun hunting chance comes by again, I have a gun that can cover it now.
I would probably never use it on deer back east, I have plenty of options there.

Fortunately, you have lots of good choices.  I favor the Federal Trophy Bonded Tip, A-Frame and Partition loads in 140-160g weights and Remington 150g Scirocco.

As a handloader, my experience is with 160g Grand Slam and 140g and 160g North Fork.  My hunting buddy uses 160g Trophy Bonded.

I had a 7mmRM for a bunch of years. Shot a moose and a few deer with it.

The first load I would try if I get another one would be the 162 Hornady BTSP Interlock, that's a reliable standard load that is hard to beat and won't cost much. The next one I would try is the Federal Fusion 150gr, I have had very good luck with every caliber Fusion load I have tried.

I agree with the above.  If you are looking for a single bullet weight to do it all, I'd recommend mid-heavy range premium bullets.  For example, if the 7MM has a bullet range thats 140-175gr, I'd probably look to a 160ish grain premium bullet like those mentioned (Don't forget the Nosler Partition).  This should give you the best compromise of velocity and penetration.

The first load I would try if I get another one would be the 162 Hornady BTSP Interlock, that's a reliable standard load that is hard to beat and won't cost much. The next one I would try is the Federal Fusion 150gr, I have had very good luck with every caliber Fusion load I have tried.

A handloaded 162g Hornady InterLock was what I used to take my first big game animal, a 20” spike bull elk.  The bullet was launched at 2950-3000fps and impacted at about 110 yards, full broadside.  It hit a rib dead center, creating a more or less caliber-sized entry and cratered the back side the full width of the rib.  After slipping between the off-side ribs it came to rest under the hide.

That bullets only retained 47.7% of its original weight, even though the challenge to its integrity was not great.  The next year I switched to 160g Grand Slam bullets.  It took me 20 years to recover one and when I did it had destroyed both shoulder joints on a 5x5 bull.  This was also on a broadside at about 110 yards.  It was also under the off-side hide when found.  The Grand Slam retained over 70% of its original weight even though the challenge to its integrity was pretty severe.

These days I shoot true premiums – North Fork, A-Frame, TTSX and MRX – and don’t worry about bullet performance.  I’ve found they work at all ranges near to far (high impact velocity to low velocity) and I’ve launched them at velocities over 3300fps.  My 140g North Fork load runs over 3200fps in my 7mm RM.  A couple years back I drove one the full length of a forkhorn mule deer.  Good luck trying that with a 162g  InterLock and short-range (high velocity) impacts.

I know a couple guys that shoot factory loaded 7mag ammo and they both swear by the Winchester black box (Supreme?) in 150 grain.  I have seen this bullet take a large bull elk with authority a couple years ago.

I haven't bought a factory shell for atleast 40 or more years, I reload everything I shoot. But I have heard really good comments about  Federal premium? But you will find most rifle have a mind of thier own what may work in one rifle mey be terrible in another. Most all factory will shoot 3" groups at 100 yards. In my early on years ammo was pretty reasonable but i still reloaded. It was for the accuracy and I could taylor a load to fit the rifle. Good Luck lou
