A couple of Marlin 336 questions

I have a Marlin 336 that was manufactured in 1976 according to a site on the net and I am trying to determine the differance in model numbers on these guns.
Some have a letter after the 336 and mine does not.
It has a 20" bbl and no checkering on the stock or forearm.
Can anyone tell me about the extra letter at the end of the model #?

  The Marlin 336 rifle came in several models over the years, and the letter after the 336 used to stand for the particular model.  The 336C stood for carbine.  The 336A was, I believe, their original full length lever rifle.   The 336CB stands, I believe, for Cowboy.

Those without a letter designation are C's that were manufactured in the 70's.  I have a 1974 model.  So yours is the standard carbine version.  I also have a 1973 336A and it does, indeed, have the 24" barrel.  SC = sporting carbine, CS = crossbolt safety, CD = cowboy, T= Texan, and there are many more designations.

They also made a 336 CL which stood for long barrel I had one in 32-20. I also have a 1895 SS in 45-70 and have never figured out what the ss stands for as the gun is blue not stainless I was told that the barrel was stanless that had been blued but that does not seem to make sense. The gun buyers digest has it listed but no explination.

The first 336 based .45-70s were straight stocked and I've heard that's what the SS stood for.

FYI:  1895 SS =

Model 1895 (altered Model 336 ILO the original M1895 design) +

"S"/sporter( PG stock, 22" bbl w/2/3 mag) +

"S" (cross-bolt safety).

I believe they were called the 1895SS prior to the CBS.
