Wouldn't it be nice...
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:30:13 PM »
if there was a nice lever gun in .327?  Or maybe in .357 Max?  Yeah, I know, I know... but the .357 does everything either of them will do!  But that don't matter... I'd LIKE to find a nice little lever in .327.

 Hello, no guns here,

I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to rebarrel a .32/20 WCF to the .327. Something along the lines of the winchester 53 with the short magazine tube on the '92 action would be my preference. Those are sweet little rifles.

But would it make a practical difference?

To me... a 32-20 at 1250 fps in a rifle doesn't equate to that same bullet and speed out of a 4" revolver.  Drop that .327 in a 20" lever gun and get about 1800 fps... at least that's what I'm reading.  I'd love to have that with an XTP or an X-bullet of some kind.  Good for many kinds of fun...

I'd just like to be able to buy one without having to resort to the gunsmith route.  A little Marlin 94 or a model '92 clone would get bought quickly if I could find one.

Wouldn't mind the .357 Max in a lever either...

Geez, waddaya know....drop the 32-20 into a 20" M92 and with a 80 gn bullet you run anywhere from 1400 - 2200'/sec.  Yep, no match for the mighty 327 cheby.  The 100 gn slug will only run from about 1150 - 1900'/sec from the same rifle.  Again, no match for the new kid on the block.

Oh yes, I must be mistaken about the ability of the 32-20 because of changes in powder burning rates over time and because the old bottlenecked formerly black powder cartridges just aren't up to snuff when compared to the new offerings but I find it interesting that the factory loads for the carbine/rifle loading in 32-20 with the 80 gn slug is only 2079'/sec with the accuracy load at 2100'/sec.(Lyman 43rd edition)

Well, I guess I have to scrap my ideas about a small lever or bolt in 7.62x25mm with either cast or jacketed loads as I am sure that in comparison to the 327, anything firing about the same weight and diameter slug at near the same velocities just isn't gonna do it.  Ahhh, poor me, I must be a dreamer.............

Why not just buy a M1 carbine it produces around 1950 with a 110 gr bullet.

Wow... sorry to hit a nerve.  Never said it was the be all and end, just said I wanted one.  A quick perusal of several manufacturers sights gave me the data I used.  Sorry, no reloading manuals.  I'm not interested in 80 grain loadings at all.  The 115's and up are probably what I would shoot.  Never even considered a 7.62x25...  That would be interesting.  But without stepping on your toes and getting it all in a wad, without offending any of the other "non-standard" caliber afficionados, I still think a .327 lever would be cool.  I also think a .357 max lever would be cool too.  Hope that doesn't get anyone too wound up.

NGH, I could be wrong but didn't marlin chamber the 32H&R mag in their 1894 for a short while? I don't know but the federal might be too long for the marlin or the 92 clones, I know the 357 max is.

I have absolutely no idea about the .32 H&R...

According to what I read, the .327 is shorter than the .357 mag.  Seems like an easy fix to put that round into any platform that will take a .357 mag length cartridge.

As for the .357 max...  wow that sucker is LONG!  I didn't realize it is longer than a .454!  I had thought that it would fit in a .454 sized platform but it might not.  It's shorter than the .45-70 and the .444 but I guess it would be too pressure for those guns.  Hmmm...

Okay so I just looked up the SAAMI specs on the .357 Max.  Even it's PROOF loads are less than the SAAMI standard for the .454.  Except for length it would not be over-pressure for any model firing the .454.

Probably not gonna get the interest needed to get one produced BUT it COULD be done.

It could be done, but with the 35 Rem. don't think it will be a big mover.  And that is sad, I have 3 single shots in the Max and would really like one in a lever as well.  DP
