22 Hornet Bullets
« on: December 11, 2009, 02:46:33 AM »
I am going to pick up my new to me 22 hornet this weekend from a guy here on these forums.  I plan on reloading for it once the ammo that comes with the gun is spent.  So a couple of questions on bullet selection.  I am gathering all of the things needed to cast bullets so I am looking for a relatively inexpensive 22 mold gas checked to make up some plinking rounds.  But for varmint use, what bullet seems to shoot the best out of these guns?  I was thinking the 30gr vMax.  What do you guys think?  It is a 2006 gun.

I am looking at buying 34 grain Varmint Nightmares fromn Midsouth. $40/500.

Gas checks alone are a quarter to half that.

You would probably need to cast a few thousand to even out the cost. Just haven't bought them due to my annual Thanksgiving-Christmas hiatus on buying stuff for myself.

my hornet likes 40gr hornady v-max molly coated. there is much more involved
other than bullet selection. the right powder and charge, primers, and COL for what the gun likes
and most of all---the operator... ;D

it took me a good while to find the right recipe for my hornet to perform
the way i wanted.

finding what is right, is the most fun.... other than putting it to use... ;D

35 G Vmaxes or 34 G varmint nightmares both shoot under an inch out of my Handi superlight. I use LIL GUN for powder.

Thanks for the replies.  I realize that picking a bullet is only half the battle, but I have a while before I can get the dies, etc so I am coming up with an economical plan now.  For the economical I think I am going to order up some of those 34 G varmint nightmares.  If I can get an Inch at 100, I'd be tickled pink.  I noticed a lot of recipes for H110.  Anyone else use it?  I have it for my 357.  I also have 2400 and unique.

Thanks,
Matt

Lil'gun and 35gr or 40gr bullets is overwhelmingly the most popular combo for the H&R Hornet, hard to beat perfect.  ;D H110 has a following too, but Lil'gun has lower pressures which is always good, I shoot Lil'gun and the 35gr Vmax, use the Lee collet die, 10 shots in and inch at 100yds is normal.  ;)

Since load data probably exists for H110 and SPM primers, and you have them, why not try em

Well dagnabit I reckon I'll have to pick some lilgun for it.  I have small rifle primers too, I reload for 223 as well.  I first have 125 rounds of factory that come with it to shoot up for some brass, then I'll go with 500 of the 34 grain varmint nightmares and a pound of lilgun and a set of lee dies.  Hey Tim, you say you use the lee collet die, is that a neck size only? I don't believe I have run across that term before.  One of you guys wouldn't be willing to send me about two dozen of those little beauties for a little monetary compensation?

thanks,
Matt

I like the MidSouth 34 grain varmint nightmare bullets. They are about as cheap as they get and they shoot well too. I liked them so well that I laid in 1K of them. I know that I am in the minority, but I just could not get Lil'Gun to shoot well out of my 22 Hornet guns. I like H110 or W296 and a small pistol primer for the lighter bullets. When you get up to 40 grain bullets, Lil'Gun has the advantage as far as velocity is concerned. I am using up the Lil'Gun I have fire forming 22 Hornets into 22K Hornets and some in my 357 Maximum. Good Luck and Good Shooting
